Nokia Naming Explained

For those who’ve been under a rock for the past 10 years, the top cell phone manufacturer in the world usually uses four digits to designate its models, reserving the special “N” and “E” prefixed for some of its most versatile and capable products.

  1. 1000 “Ultrabasic” - The cheapest (or “affordable” as marketing peeps would say) phones offered by Nokia. My experience has been that these phones usually only do calls and SMS, but do them pretty well. The lack of high-end features also means that 1000 series phones are usually the most responsive.

  2. 2000 “Basic” - Also cheap, but carry some extra features like Bluetooth. Some “higher-end” variants even have cameras built-in.

  3. 3000 “Expression” - Another creative way of saying “cheap”. More recent (as of 2008) 3000 models are borderline mid-range, color-screen gadgets that are capable of taking pictures, playing music, and even connecting to a PC.

  4. 4000 - For some reason Nokia hasn’t named any phones 4xxx (as far as I know). Maybe the Finnish company could start doing so once they use up the other 8000+ digits?

  5. 5000 “Active” - A fitting series name, especially when you look at models like the relatively old 5500 (a ruggedized product meant for jogging), the 5300, 5700, 5310, and 5610 (all music-oriented phones).

  6. 6000 “Classic Business” - Here’s where Nokia starts blurring the lines. Granted, the 6500 Slide is pretty mid-range, perhaps even high-end. But that’s not the case with the decidedly entry-level 6030. The confusion is probably due to the so many Nokia phones out there starting with a 6.

  7. 7000 “Experimental” - Very descriptive of the series, since the first S60 smartphone, the 7650, falls under here. You’ve also got aesthetic experiments like the Prisms. And who can forget the 7110, with the roller and snappy keypad revelation?

  8. 8000 “Premium” - To be honest, the only experience I have with these series is that phone from the first Matrix. I did witness a friend confidently take his phone out, and press the button to release the cover, only to have it fly off! Lol.

  9. 9000 “Communicator” - Every geek knows this as the predecessor to Nokia’s current E series (see below). First models of this series even ran on GEOS, not Symbian, while latter ones worked on the defunct Series 80.

  10. E-Series - The “E” stands for Enterprise. This series is literally all about business, usually featuring phones with minimalyst styling, comprehensive feature set, and best of all, responsiveness. I fell in love with the E51, E61, and E6i1 for these very reasons, and I’m totally excited about the upcoming E71.

  11. N-Series - I’m less ambivalent about the N-Series, and it’s not only because of the high-end prices. I totally understand Nokia’s push to cram everything imaginable into a phone, but does it have to come at a cost to responsiveness, battery life, and many others? A few models have won me over though, especially the N82.

Man in Wheel Chair Charged With Drunk Driving

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Police in Australia have charged a man for drink driving in a motorized wheelchair after he was found to be six times over the legal alcohol limit, local media reported on Monday.

Police in the tropical northern Queensland city of Cairns said the man had a blood alcohol reading of 0.31, and was so drunk he was asleep at the controls of his motorized wheelchair in a turning lane of a major highway.

"It beggars belief," Police Inspector Bob Walters told the Cairns Post newspaper, adding wheelchairs, bicycles, horses and skateboards were all considered to be vehicles under the state's road laws.

"It's unlawful, it is unacceptable and people should realize it could lead to a fatality," he said.

Other motorists on the four-lane highway had to swerve to avoid the wheelchair, police said.

When A Switch-Pitcher Confuses A Switch-Hitter

In baseball, a right-handed batter prefers to hit against a left-handed pitcher, and a left-handed batter prefers to hit against a right-handed pitcher. Things really get interesting, when a pitcher can pitch with both hands, as much as when a batter can bat with either hands, although the latter is more common than the former. In fact, it's almost unheard for a pitcher to pitch with both hands, until now.

His name is Pat Venditte and he is on the Yankees minor league team. He uses a special glove with four fingers and two thumbs so he doesn’t have to switch gloves between batters. Watch what happens when a Switch-Hitter Meets Ambidextrous Switch-Pitcher. The people who wrote the rule book didn’t anticipate this.

This is the entire 8 minute incident, not just the Sportscenter highlight.

World Now has 10 million Millionaires

Associated Press

NEW YORK – Add an extra zero to the ranks of the millionaires club.

The number of people around the world with at least $1 million in assets passed 10 million for the first time last year, according to a new report. And their bank accounts are growing even faster.

The combined wealth of the globe's millionaires grew to nearly $41 trillion last year, an increase of 9 percent from a year before, Merrill Lynch & Co. and consulting firm Capgemini Group said Tuesday.

That means their average wealth was more than $4 million, the highest it's ever been. Home values were not included in asset totals.

"The growth of their wealth is outpacing the growth of their population, and that's a trend that's going to continue in coming years," said Ileana Van Der Linde, a principal with Capgemini.

The ranks of the wealthy are growing fastest in the developing economies of India, China and Brazil. The number of millionaires in India grew by about 23 percent.

The United States still reigns supreme when it comes to fat wallets, though: One in every three millionaires in the world lives in America. Combined, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America account for just one in 10.

All told, there were about 600,000 more millionaires in the world in 2007 than in 2006, for a total of about 10.1 million. That's a 6 percent increase from the previous year.

Ten million may seem like a big number for such an elite club, but it still represents less than one-fifth of 1 percent of the world's 6.7 billion people.

The rarefied group of the superrich – those with at least $30 million in assets – got richer, too. There were 103,000 of them around the world last year, 9 percent more than the year before, and their wealth grew by nearly 15 percent.

The 600,000 new millionaires was unsurprising to Brian Bethune, an economist with Global Insight, who said inflation and the expansion of the world economy accounts for the growth.

Besides, $1 million isn't what it used to be. One million dollars in 1996, the first year the report was issued, would have been worth about $1.3 million last year, Van Der Linde said.

Steady growth powered economies worldwide in the first half of 2007, but more mature markets were hammered in the second half by the U.S. housing and credit crises. Emerging economies were largely unaffected, the report found.

The downturn started catching up with emerging economies in the beginning of 2008, Van Der Linde said.

Already, the report found, the millionaires club wasn't expanding as fast as before. From 2005 to 2006, the group swelled by more than 8 percent. The club has grown every year since the report was started.

Because of the economic slowdown, the wealthy tended to shift their money to safer investments such as bonds and money-market savings accounts, and away from less stable investments such as real estate, the report found.

Cash deposits and fixed-income securities accounted for 44 percent of the assets of the world's millionaires, up from 35 percent in 2006.

The wealth of the world's richest is projected to reach almost $60 trillion by 2012, the report said.

The Baby with No Ears

Little Johnny’s neighbors had a new baby. Unfortunately, the baby was born without ears. When the mother brought the baby home from the hospital, Little Johnny’s family was invited over to see him.

Before they left their house, little Johnny’s dad had a talk with him and explained that the baby had no ears. His dad also told him that if he so much as mentioned anything about the baby’s missing ears of even said the word “ears,” he would get the spanking of his life when they came home.

Little Johnny told his dad that he understood completely.

When Johnny looked into the crib he said, “What a beautiful baby.”

The mother said, “Why, thank you, Little Johnny.”

Little Johnny said, “He has beautiful little feet and beautiful little hands, a cute little nose and really beautiful eyes. Can he see?,” asked Johnny.

“Yes,” the mother replied, “we are so thankful. The doctor said he will have 20/20 vision.”

“That’s great,” said Little Johnny, “‘cuz he’d be shit out of luck if he needed glasses.”

Player Ratings: Germany 0-1 Spain

GERMANY

Lehmann: 8 – The single reason why the winning margin was not much greater. Superb save to prevent Metzelder from turning the ball into his own net, and made a number of other stops. Could do nothing on Torres’ goal.

Friedrich: 4 – Germany have had some brilliant full backs over the years - Paul Breitner, Berti Vogts, Hans-Peter Briegel, Andreas Brehme – the list goes on and on. To mention Friedrich among any of these names would be blasphemy.

Mertesacker: 4 – Germany have also had a plethora of world class centre backs – Franz Beckenbauer, Jurgen Kohler and Matthias Sammer to name just a few – Herr Mertesacker is not one of these. At fault when Torres hit the post, and terrorised all night by the Liverpool man.

Metzelder: 5 – Also struggled, as he has during the whole tournament. Not even that overgrown beard can disguise his deficiencies. Part of the worst German defence since the 1940s.

Lahm: 5 – The fourth and final member of the Marx Brothers. Bright going forward, but again struggled badly defensively, and he allowed Torres to get round the back of him for the goal. Substituted at half time.

Schweinsteiger: 6.5 – One of Germany’s best players, full of energy and running. Made some intelligent runs into the box, although his set pieces were very poor.

Frings: 6 – Started the game authoritatively but could not gain a foothold thereafter, and seemed to tire in the second half.

Hitzlsperger: 5 – An honest player, but he quite clearly lacks the quality at this level of football. Outclassed by the Spanish midfielders, and replaced on 57 minutes.

Podolski: 5.5 – Tried hard but never really got into the game. Has had an excellent tournament but tonight it just didn’t happen for him. Must be credited for his fair play when Silva put his head into his face.

Ballack: 6 – Was a doubt for the game, and never really looked fully fit. Went closest to finding a German goal when he shot just wide in the second half.

Klose: 6 – Excellent in the first 15 minutes, and could have scored early on, however he contributed little thereafter as Spain completely dominated.

Substitutes

Jansen: 5 – Came on at half time for Lahm but did no better than his Bayern team-mate. Comically played Sergio Ramos onside when Lehmann pulled off a fine save at 0-1.

Kuranyi: 5.5 – Brought on to add some extra firepower to the attack, but caused no problems to the Spanish defence at all.

Gomez: 5.5 – Similar assessment to Kuranyi. The story of Gomez’s tournament.

SPAIN

Casillas: 7 - Unflappable all night, dealing with everything that came his way. Did particularly well on crosses. Having said this, he did not have a save of note to make.

Sergio Ramos: 6.5 - Started nervously, and made a horrendous error that could have gifted an early goal to Klose. However he improved greatly as the game wore on and perhaps should have scored to make it 2-0.

Marchena: 7 - Was believed to be the Spanish weak link coming into Euro 2008 but in truth he has had a good tournament, and he did well again tonight.

Puyol: 6.5 - Showed all of his leadership qualities once again, but not as impressive as he was against Italy and Russia, and made a couple of defensive errors.

Capdevila: 6 - Caused some problems by Schweinsteiger during the first 20 minutes of the second half, but apart from this he had a generally sound game.

Iniesta: 8 - Perhaps his best performance at the Euros. Caused the Germans problems all night with his jinking runs, and intelligent reverse passes. Outstanding.

Senna: 9 - The exact player that Spain have been missing in recent years. Has carried out such a vital role in front of the back four all tournament and it was the same tonight. Tactically perfect. Player of the tournament?

Xavi: 9 - Displayed all of his classy playmaking skills and ran the show in the middle of the park. The difference in technical quality between Xavi and the German midfielders was huge.

Silva: 7.5 - Has been one of the best young players at the Euros, and once again displayed all of his raw talent tonight. Switched from right to left and caused both German full backs all sorts of problems. Could have been red carded though after his altercation with Podolski.

Fabregas: 6 - Contributed to the team effort but it never really happened for Fabregas tonight. Was overshadowed by his midfield peers.

Torres: 8 - Led the line on his own superbly, and caused the shambolic German defence all kinds of headaches. Hit the post with a header, before scoring the goal that won Spain their first major trophy in 44 years.

Substitutes

Xabi Alonso: 7 - Germany had a bright start to the second half, but Alonso steadied the ship after coming on and helped Spain regain their dominance.

Cazorla: 6.5 - Did well after coming on, linking up nicely with Iniesta and Xavi.

Güiza: 6.5 - Has impressed as a substitute against both Italy and Russia, and he again was lively tonight. Almost set-up Senna for what would have been a deserved second goal.

Spain Win Euro 2008 !!!!

Spain's 44-year wait is over. One shot from Fernando Torres sent Spain past Germany 1-0 Sunday and ignited a Spanish celebration that hasn't been seen since their European championship in 1964.

Fernando Torres was the hero for Spain by firing them to Euro 2008 glory against Germany in Vienna - and ending 44 years of underachievement.

Torres struck in the 33rd minute at Ernst Happel Stadion and despite the efforts of Germany skipper Michael Ballack, they held on to their lead to spark wild celebrations in Austria's capital.

Heavyweights in European football who produce a constant stream of individual talents, Spain had not won a major tournament since 1964 but finally shook off their tag of being chokers, not able to cope with the pressure of the highest stage.

They have also been perceived as a nation divided by their regions - the lyrics to their national anthem are not used - but full-back Sergio Ramos had kept mentioning the word "united'' this week, and when Torres secured the Henri Delaunay for them they were just that.

Just shy of his 70th birthday, Luis Aragones will now leave his post as coach, probably for Fenerbahce, as a champion. Vicente del Bosque has been tipped to take over and he will inherit a young squad who have their sights on the World Cup.

While Portugal appeared destabilised by Chelsea announcing Luiz Felipe Scolari as their new coach during these finals, there were no signs of the same happening to Spain following Fenerbahce's statement revealing Aragones as their new boss on the eve of their semi-final.

They finish as the tournament's top goalscorers, helped by Torres who took the Premier League by storm with 33 rookie goals for Liverpool.

He was not on the top of his game for the whole of the tournament, but the 24-year-old stepped into the shoes of David Villa when Spain needed him.

"Viva Espana'' sang their fans before the sangria started flowing.

This was billed as a clash of Germany's efficiency and power versus Spain's fluidity and creativity which were on display as Russia were swept aside in the semi-finals.

Germany's drive came from Ballack, with the Chelsea midfielder passed fit despite carrying a calf injury on the eve of the final.

'Against the odds we will win the trophy', read one headline from a German newspaper on the day of the game - and Ballack was seen as the key to their chances.

They had been inconsistent in the group stages, then stuttered past Turkey after outmuscling Portugal.

Only Ballack's level of performance had been high throughout all of it but he ends the tournament a 'nearly man' again.

Six years ago he missed the World Cup final through suspension just after Bayer Leverkusen missed a trio of chances for silverware.

This season Manchester United pipped him to the Premier League and Champions League - and he finds himself the bridesmaid once more.

Facing Ballack was a Barcelona-bred wall of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas in midfield, with Arsenal's youngster getting his chance following Villa's injury.

But before they were allowed to impose themselves on the game, Germany had already wasted two early chances.

Ramos lost his bearings and gifted a pass straight to Miroslav Klose, whose poor touch let him down as he sped past Carles Puyol - and the opportunity had gone.

Then Thomas Hitzlsperger was teed up on the edge of the area by Klose but could not get purchase on his shot.

Spain started to move through the gears after their double reprieve, never looking back after they were let off the hook.

Their opening chance came after a Xavi pass had split the German defence to find Iniesta on the left. When the cross came over, Christoph Metzelder sliced towards his own goal and Jens Lehmann, the oldest player to feature in a European Championship final, athletically tipped around the post.

The post came to Lehmann's rescue when Torres climbed above Per Mertesacker to meet Ramos' centre - but the Liverpool man was not made to wait long for his goal.

It came 12 minutes before the break when Xavi played the ball beyond Philipp Lahm. The full-back was favourite to clear but Torres used pace and muscle to get around him and chip over Lehmann before celebrating his goal by sucking his thumb.

It could have got worse for Germany had David Silva not volleyed over wildly when found at the far post by Iniesta.

And German fans feared the worst when Ballack was forced off with a cut eye, but he returned after getting the bloodied injury treated twice. He was also booked along with opposing captain Iker Casillas for talking back at the referee.

Spain had chances to make it comfortable after the break, with Lehmann saving from Ramos' header and Iniesta getting a drive cleared off the line.

Their own indiscipline almost cost them when Silva butted his head towards Lukas Podolski - but no card was shown.

Torres was taken off in the 78th minute, with his job already done in waking the sleeping giants of European football.

Analysts: Price for TMI’s Idea buy on high side

KUALA LUMPUR (The Star): TM International Bhd (TMI) finally gets to partner India’s Idea Cellular after a failed attempt four years ago, but analysts say this time round TMI is paying a hefty sum of US$1.82bil for just over 19% of Idea.

At a press conference yesterday, TMI officials defended the deal, saying “it was a window of opportunity that should not be missed.”

“We may be paying a premium now so that we would be in the best situation to compete with bigger players in the fast growing Indian market,” president and group executive officer Datuk Jamaludin Ibrahim told reporters via a video-conference from India.

He was in India to seal the agreement between TMI, Idea, Aditya Birla Group and Spice Communications Ltd.

In Kuala Lumpur, TMI executive director and group chief financial officer Datuk Yusof Annuar Yaacob said: “We are buying for (future) growth ... it is a more expensive dream come true.”

TMI first courted Idea four years ago but was not able to strike a deal. Wanting so much to enter the Indian market, it opted for a 40% stake in Spice in 2006. It paid US$179mil for the stake.

Although Spice had operations in only two circles – Karnataka and Punjab – it gave TMI an entry into one of the fastest growing markets in the world where net additions are seven million to eight million every month.

Yusof revealed that Idea and Spice had been in discussions since last year and that the talks intensified early this year. Idea announced about 10 days ago it was buying BK Modi’s stake in Spice. As a result of that, Spice and Idea would be merged.

Given that scenario, TMI’s stake after the merger and taking into account the preference shares it would subscribe to, TMI would have less than 20% for which it would pay US$1.8bil. Of the amount, US$1bil would be used for future capital expenditure for Idea-Spice.

Yusof said TMI would raise cash via a bridging facility to pay for the transaction. TMI would also get one board seat in the merged entity.

Although analysts felt that TMI was paying a lot for the deal, Yusof said even without the deal, TMI would have to spend US$1.5bil to roll out services in India. The new transaction, he added, would place TMI on a better footing with its Indian investment.

With nearly 20% stake in Idea, it will be able to equity-account and contribution to earnings is expected in the first year.

From being an investor in the eight player with 1.6% market share in India, this new transaction will see TMI being elevated to the fifth largest player that has access to 700 million population and an 11% market share.

Despite the massive potential in India, an analyst said in a report that TMI’s near-term price performance would remain subdued, adversely affected by the pricing of the latest deal and the impact of dilution of earnings.

TMI shares took a beating on Bursa Malaysia yesterday. It shed 40 sen, or 5.7%, to RM6.60 at the close and was among the top 10 losers.

MyBlog is Under Construction

Dear Viewers,

I apologized for the many interruptions and changes that might not be pleasing during the last few days, as I am currently renovating this blog under new template.

The changes are important, as the previous template is not pleasing to the eyes, in addition to its very slow loading on most PC, including mine.

As some of you might have noticed, I have changed the template to Andreas02 last Friday. However, another changes are needed as the new template lack space for my content and layout items. Furthermore, editing the layout under Andreas02 is cumbersome and difficult.

Hence, this template is used and it will take some time before it finally runs, as I am not good in programming, graphics or anything in regards to web publication.

Last but not least, thanks for viewing and again I apologized for the changes, as well as for lack of posts during this process.

The River IQ Test

The River IQ Test (aka River IQ Game) is a mental puzzle. The name originates as it supposedly is given as an IQ test to job applicants in China. The puzzle is in Chinese, but can be completed with ease once the rules have been translated.

It's like that old riddle about the fox, the chicken, and the bag of seeds. There are three groups that need to get across, but certain people will beat up on different members of the other groups. You have to get everyone across the river safely.

The Rules

Within the game, there is a father, a mother, two sons, two daughters, the thief and the police. Your task is to move all of them across the river applying the following rules :-

1. At most two persons on the raft at any time
2. The father cannot stay with any of the daughters without their mother's presence
3. The mother cannot stay with any of the sons without their father's presence
4. The thief (striped shirt) cannot stay with any family member if the police officer is not there
5. Only the father, the mother and the police officer know how to operate the raft

SAPP MPs Cite Reasons For Supporting Decision

PETALING JAYA (The Star): SAPP’s two MPs Datuk Dr Chua Soon Bui and Eric Enchin Majimbun said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi should make way for other people to take over the country’s leadership if he could not perform.

During a press conference in Kota Kinabalu Wednesday, in which SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee announced the party’s decision to move a no-confidence motion against Abdullah when Parliament convenes this Monday, both Dr Chua and Majimbun issued signed press statements outlining their reasons for supporting their party’s decision.

Dr Chua, said Abdullah should step down due to a lack of action on several national issues and problems concerning Sabah despite repeated requests and appeals by several Sabah MPs from Umno, Upko and herself in Parliament.

“Our sovereignty is threatened,” she added.

She also said Malaysians, especially those in Sabah, had been greatly burdened by the sudden hike in fuel prices and the Government had not come up with a comprehensive plan to counter the issue.

“We will fail as elected representatives if the issues raised by the Sabah people on poor delivery system, corruption, waste of resources and lack of transparency and accountability are ignored,” she said.

Sepanggar MP Eric Majimbun said that he didn’t have confidence in Abdullah’s leadership in view of the clash in the dates of the announcement of the dissolution of Parliament in March and the sudden and shocking rise in fuel prices.

Riise Officially A Roma Player

Full back John Arne Riise has completed his move from Liverpool to AS Roma on a four year deal.

The rumours of the last few days regarding Norwegian full back John Arne Riise did not leave much space for speculations, and neither did his brief visit to Rome. The former Liverpool player's future is no longer in doubt: he has just signed a contract with AS Roma, who announced the transfer on a note on its official website.

Liverpool will receive 5 million euros in exchange, to be paid in four terms before January 2010. As usual, there are a series of bonuses connected to results of the team and performances of the player. Riise will be paid 2.8 million euros for the next four seasons until 2012.

The Norwegian international had joined the Reds in 2001, winning a number of trophies, including the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006.

The Coolest Coasters From Around the Globe

Film director Alfred Hitchcock often said people go to scary movies for the same reason we ride on roller coasters. We enjoy being scared … more or less safely. And we enjoy anticipating the fright and how we'll respond to it.

So, on the anniversary of the opening of the first gravity-driven amusement-park roller coaster, we offer a small selection of some of the world's finest -- and scariest -- rides.

Latest Update: SAPP's Vote of No Confidence against PM

KOTA KINABALU (The Star): The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has lost confidence in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, it said at a press conference here Wednesday.

In the coming sitting of the Parliament session on Monday, its two Members of Parliament will support a vote of no confidence against the Prime Minister, the party said.

Whether its MPs table the vote of no confidence, or whether other MPs will do it, would be determined in due course, it said in a statement.

SAPP’s two MPs are Datuk Eric Enchin Majimbun (P171 Sepanggar) and Datuk Dr Chua Soon Bui (P190 Tawau).

The party also has four state representatives.

The statement was read out by Dr Chua and signed by Majimbun, who was overseas on official duties. He will be back for the Parliament sitting next Monday, June 23.

The statement listed four areas of dissatisfaction with Abdullah's premiership:

1) That no concrete action had been taken on the issue of illegal immigrants, despite repeated requests by SAPP and other Barisan component parties;

2) That the government had offered no holistic economic solutions to cushion the blow of the sudden hike in fuel prices, which had greatly burdened the people and threatened further hardcore poverty;

3) That not enough attention had been paid to issues raised by the people of Sabah -- poor delivery systems, corruption, wastage, lack of transparency and accountability -- and that SAPP would have failed in its duty as elected representatives if these issues continued to be ignored; and

4) That the people have lost confidence in Abdullah, and that if he can't perform, he should step aside and make way for another leader to take over.

Talk had been rife Wednesday morning that SAPP was going to abandon the Barisan Nasional coalition and defect to the Pakatan Rakyat alliance.

The party is running a poll on its blog, asking members of the public whether it should stay on in Barisan, leave the coalition but remain independent, or join Pakatan.

At press time, there were 874 votes tallied, with 83% (728 votes) asking SAPP to join Pakatan. Only 2% (25 votes) urged it to stay on with Barisan.

PM Unaware of Sabah MPs Forming Own Bloc

KOTA KINABALU (The Star): Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is unaware of any move by Sabah MPs to form an independent bloc.

“No, I have not been told,” he replied to reporters when asked if he has been told about the speculation of Sabah MPs forming their own coalition.

The Prime Minister was here to close the Second International CEOs Conference.

Abdullah also held a dinner meeting with Umno grassroots leaders before returning to Kuala Lumpur last night.

In a related development, the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) is scheduled to make a major announcement today.

The press conference of SAPP president Datuk Yong Teck Lee is scheduled for 2pm, according to a senior party leader who spoke on condition of anonymity.

He said the party leadership would make an important announcement and declaration, and described deputy president Datuk Raymond Tan’s statement on a speculated shift in political power as “politicking”.

The official claimed that the announcement would have national implications and had been thought out for the state and Sabahans.

“We are not lone rangers in this move,” he said, declining to give further details.

Talk of a group of Barisan Nasional MPs seeing “eye to eye” on how to work as a pressure bloc has raised the political temperature in Sabah since last week.

A statement by Umno’s Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah on Saturday that a component party could be pulling out of Barisan soon led to denials by Sabah leaders and several Barisan component party leaders.

Despite the denials, there has been no stop to talk that several of them would make the move anytime from today.

This group, said to comprise up to 18 of 25 Sabah MPs, is believed to be preparing to form a coalition of its own to work with counterparts in Sarawak and peninsular Malaysia from within Barisan or outside, including Pakatan Rakyat.

Adding fuel to the fire yesterday was the absence of several Barisan MPs during Abdullah’s visit.

A notable absentee was SAPP president Yong.

Until Monday, Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman, who is state Barisan chairman, has maintained that there was no indication of any component party quitting the ruling coalition.

Yong could not be reached for comment while deputy president Tan, who is a Deputy Chief Minister, stated that being vocal did not mean that the party was leaving Barisan.

Among those who have been vocal on Sabah issues in the wake of the March 8 general election showing were Musa’s brother Kimanis MP Datuk Anifah Aman, Kalabakan MP Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh, Upko deputy president Datuk Wilfred Bumburing, the MP for Tuaran, and PBS vice-president Datuk Edmond Chong, the Bati Sapi MP.

“It is not that they are planning to jump to Pakatan Rakyat parties. They have reached some sort of a consensus on forming an independent bloc for the people of Sabah and change in the country and may use an existing Barisan component for that bloc,” is how an observer sees it.

Among the key issues agreed on were political autonomy, 20% oil royalty by Jan 1, 2009, return of Labuan by 2010, resolving the illegal immigrant problem in a humane manner, having just participation in the federal administration and reviewing unfair and imprudent federal laws.

Oranje End Romanian Dream

Netherlands 2-0 Romania

Despite making no fewer than nine changes to their side, the Dutch maintained their 100% record with an easy win over a Romanian side that simply was not up to it on such a crucial night. The Tricolorii go home, while the Dutch prepare to meet Russia or Sweden...

The World Champions of Italy might have so nearly been humbled, and France may also have left with their tails between their legs, but the fairytale of Romania's advancement through the 'Group of Death' concluded before the final chapter was written.

For it was the jubilant Dutch that left with all three points in Bern, Marco van Basten's all-changed line-up doing more than enough to sink their opponents on what was a largely uninspiring occasion.

First Half

Very little occurred to excite the largely Dutch crowd in the stadium in the opening stages. The Netherlands, perhaps finding their feet with an unfamiliar line-up, were content to work through slow buildup. Romania, meanwhile, offered little.

Bit after the quarter hour mark the Tricolorii began to apply a little bit of pressure with their possession, mainly through Adrian Mutu. The striker, though, was to endure a luckless evening from a wide position behind Marius Niculae, hit his first real chance off Wilfred Bouma 20 minutes in.

At the other end, the Holland side sprung into life. First Afellay cut the ball back wonderfully into the box only for Chivu to clear at full stretch as the danger mounted.

The game took on something of an end-to-end quality for a while after that, but neither side looked particularly coherent. The Dutch, though, marginally had the better of it, not least after Huntelaar flicked the ball on to an unmarked Robben 35 minutes in only for the Real Madrid man to drag his shot just wide when he shohld have scored.

Codrea passed up a similarly positive opportunity at the other end, albeit from longer range, as half time approached, and although the Romanians had made them sweat on occasion the Dutch seemed to be on top.

Second Half

Still, the Romanians had everything to play for in the second period and came out with all due enthusiasm. After some pressure in the final third, though, a wasted free-kick was all that the Tricolorii had to show for their efforts.

The Oranje, then, took the initiative once more. Van Persie, getting on the end of a lovely long ball, was let down by a weak shot on the turn, but soon enough it was to be 1-0 to the Oranje.

It was a well-worked team effort, and it came on the break. Romania surrendered the ball, and the Dutch brought it down the right. Afellay crossed it in low, and with Engelaar stepping over it, there was Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to decisively side-foot it into the back of the net.

Romania had to do something, and Daniel Niculae came on for namesake Marius to reply to Melchiot's coming on for Boulahrouz. The Dutch, not to be outdone, then raised the stakes by replacing Robben with Kuyt.

Kuyt was to see plenty of the ball over the next ten minutes, although there were to be relatively few chances. Afellay had the best of it 20 minutes from time after being put through by Van Persie, but a sliding challenge from Tamas did for that.

Romania, despite still having it all to play for, were exhausted and presumably demoralised by news of Italy's 2-0 lead, and it showed as the jubilant Dutch finished strongly. Indeed, they were to find a second goal: atoning for his earlier miss, Robin Van Persie getting on the end of a cross from the right before beating Lobont with a wonderful effort into the roof of the net.

The Tricolorii heads, then, were well and truly down, and the Dutch held theirs high as they take their 100% record to the next round to meet Sweden or Russia. Romania, who started so well and shocked the world champions and France, leave empty-handed.

Player Ratings: Netherlands 2-0 Romania

With Italy beating France, the Romanians needed to beat Holland to progress, but rarely threatened to score, and were ultimately undone by a lack of genuine creativity and cutting edge. In contrast, Marco van Basten made nine changes and saw hisreserve side ease to a comfortable victory. Furthrmore, hehas now been able to give every member of his squad except the third goalkeeper some playing time.

Netherlands

16. Maarten Stekelenburg - 6.5
He didn't have too much to do but did it competently and was alert when he needed to be.

21. Khalid Boulahrouz - 6.5
Steady and solid before being substituted in the 58th minute.

3. Johnny Heitinga - 7
Marshalled the Dutch defence well and put in some important interceptions while playing the ball intelligently out from the back.

14. Wilfred Bouma - 6.5
Generally tidy at the back and apart from one short back-pass to Stekelenburg in the second half rarely caused any consternation.

15. Tim De Cler - 7
Improved as the game went on after being caught out of position once otr twice early on. His crossing from the left flank offered a useful dimension to Dutch attacks.

6. Demy De Zeeuw - 6.5
Mostly quick and alert and did his job wellwith a minimumof fuss.

8. Orlando Engelaar - 7.5
Had a good, hard-working game and was a driving influence from midfield who was involved in most Dutch attacks. His deft touch to Huntelaar for the first goal was important.

20. Ibrahim Afellay - 8.5
Continually caught the eye with an outstanding performance, giving and receiving the ball over the pitch and creating several moments of real quality.

7. Robin Van Persie - 8
He looked a bit ring rusty initially but grew into the game when he settled down, making good runs and passing the ball well. His goal, Holland's second, showed real class as he out-thought and out-muscled Cosmin Contra before lashing the ball into the roof of the net with a trade-mark left-foot shot.

11. Arjen Robben - 7
Appeared to be trying just a touch too hard early on and should have scored when Huntelaar cushioned a deft pass into his path, but poked his effort just wide. Was replaced on 62 minutes by Dirk Kuyt.

19. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar - 7
Produced a delicate touch to convert Holland's first goal after scuffing a shot over the bar earlier on, and laid on some telling passes in and around the box.

Substitutes:

12. Mario Melchiot (58'): - 7
Offered an enterprising outlet on the right wing he came on.

18. Dirk Kuyt (62'): - 7
Typically hard-working after replacing Robben, and his first contribution was a delicate ball over the top for fellow-sub Melchiot.

22. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (82') - 6
Not on long enough to make much of an impact, but was looking for runs and angles when Holland attacked.

Romania

1. Bogdan Lobont - 6
Had a quiet first half night but could not really be faulted for either goal.

2. Cosmin Contra - 6
At fault for the second goal but worked hard for the cause and looked to get forward whenever he could.

4. Gabriel Sebastian Tamas - 5.5
Guilty of giving the ball away too easily at times, and sometimes exposed by the speed of thought of Dutch attackers.

14. Sorin Ghionea - 5.5
Not one of his best games, sometimes making hard work of seeing the ball out or clearing his lines.

3. Razvan Rat - 6.5
Supplied some clever long balls forward as he tried to get his team in behind the Dutch, but also wasted possession once or twice. But overall worked tirelessly.

11. Razvan Cocis - 6
Blasted high and wide 15 yards out with the goal gaping early on, and also took a cross at the far post that that he might have got converted if he'd hit it first time, but was muscled out of it by Bouma. Lacked real quality when it mattered.

8. Paul Codrea - 5.5
Put a shot over when he might have done better and played in a couple of crosses too close to the keeper. Was replaced on 72 minutes.

5. Cristian Chivu - 6.5
A patchy performance which was good in parts but also disappointing. Got himself booked but also took a slight knock in the first half that he had to run off. Looked frustrated by the way the match unfolded.

16. Banel Nicolita - 7
Replaced after 82 minutes, Nicolita showed good pace on occasions but his final ball let him down.

18. Marius Niculae - 5.5
First Romanian to be substituted. Sent one smart volley on the turn flashing past the post.

10. Adrian Mutu - 7.5
Was by far Romania's biggest threat in the first half, and produced one or two flashes of magic, but his influence faded as the game wore on. Mutu had his side's first real chance, spinning beyond Bouma but seeing his left-foot effort deflected away by Boulahrouz. There was a heavy weight of rxpectation on his shoulders, but he lacked adequate service.

Substitutes:

7. Florentin Petre (82'): - 5
Not on long enough to affect the game.

20. Nicolae Dica (72'): 5.5
Had a decent chance to score after coming on but dwelt too long on it.

21. Daniel Niculae (59'): 6
Niculae worked hard for little reward up front.

Celtics Smash Lakers, Bring Home 17th NBA Championship

LAL (14-7) 20 15 25 32 92
BOS (16-10) 24 34 31 42 131

BOSTON (AP) -- With Russell and Havlicek sitting courtside, and Red surely lighting up a victory cigar somewhere, these Boston Celtics returned to glory like the great teams before them.

Dominant in every way.

On a new parquet floor below aging championship banners hung in the rafters two decades back, the Celtics won their 17th NBA title and a first one -- at last -- for Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen -- their Big Three for a new generation.

After 22 long years, the NBA has gone green.

Lifted by ear-splitting chants of "Beat L.A." early and cries of "Seven-teen" in the closing seconds by their adoring crowd, the Celtics concluded a shocking rebound of a season with a stunning 131-92 blowout over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 6 on Tuesday night.

"It means so much more because these are the guys, the Havliceks, the Bill Russells, the Cousys," Pierce said. "These guys started what's going on with those banners. They don't hang up any other banners but championship ones.

"And now I'm a part of it."

With the outcome assured, Boston fans sang into the night as if they were in a pub on nearby Canal Street. They serenaded the newest champs in this city of champs, and taunted Kobe Bryant and his Lakers, who drowned in a green-and-white wave for 48 minutes.

Garnett scored 26 points with 14 rebounds, Allen scored 26 and Pierce, the Finals MVP who shook off a sprained right knee sustained in Game 1, added 17 as the Celtics, a 24-win team a year ago, wrapped up their first title since 1986.

Rajon Rondo had 21 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and six steals as the Celtics, who built a 23-point halftime lead and obliterated the Lakers, who were trying to become the first team to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the Finals.

They didn't stand a chance.

Boston's 39-point win surpassed the NBA record for the biggest margin of victory in a championship clincher; the Celtics beat the Lakers 129-96 in Game 5 of the 1965 NBA Finals.

In the final minute, Pierce doused Celtics coach Doc Rivers with red Gatorade. Owner Wyc Grousbeck, who named his group Banner 17 to leave no doubt about his goal, put an unlit cigar in his mouth -- a tribute to Auerbach, the patriarch who had a hand in the franchise's first 16 titles.

Garnett dropped to the parquet and kissed the leprechaun at center court and then found Russell, the Hall of Famer who taught him the Celtic way, for a long embrace.

"I got my own. I got my own," Garnett said. "I hope we made you proud."

"You sure did," Russell said.

Rivers pulled Pierce, Garnett and Allen with 4:01 left and they shared a group hug with their coach, who was nearly run out of town last season. Rivers lost his father at the beginning of this remarkable run, a season no one expected.

By the time Rivers was handed the Larry O'Brien Trophy, it was June 18 -- his late father's birthday.

When the game clock reached zeros, Rivers reflected on his dad.

"My first thought was what would my dad say," Rivers said, "and honestly I started laughing because I thought he would probably say, if you knew my dad, 'It's about time. What have you been waiting for?'"

It's was Boston's first title since the passing of Auerbach, whose presence was the only thing missing on this night. Even Auerbach, who died in 2006, got some satisfaction. Led by Rivers, Auerbach's beloved team denied Lakers coach Phil Jackson from overtaking him with a 10th championship.

The Boston-Los Angeles rivalry, nothing more than black-and-white footage from the 60s and TV highlights of players wearing short shorts in the 80s to young hoops fans, remains tilted toward the Atlantic Ocean. The Celtics are 9-2 against the Lakers in the Finals.

Boston missed its first crack at closing out the series in Game 5, but the Celtics didn't miss on their second swing, running the Lakers out of the gym.

Bryant, the regular season MVP, finished with 22 points on 7-of-22 shooting.

He started 4-of-5 from the field and seemed intent on forcing a Game 7. But he missed seven shots in a row and everywhere he went, L.A.'s No. 24 ran smack into a wall of Boston defense as high as the Green Monster.

"They were definitely the best defense I've seen the entire playoffs," Bryant said. "I've seen some pretty stiff ones and this was right up there with them. The goal was to win a championship, it wasn't to win MVP or anything like that, it was to win a championship."

Garnett and Allen were All-Stars in other cities, stuck in Minnesota and Seattle, respectively, on teams going nowhere. But brought together in trades last summer by Celtics general manager Danny Ainge, a member of the '86 Celtics champions, they joined Pierce and formed an unbreakable bond, a trio as tight as the club's lucky shamrock logo.

They resisted being called The Big Three, a nickname given to Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish two decades ago.

"This is the reason we came here," Garnett said. "This is the reason we got together, and Danny made it go down. This is it right now."

With Garnett scoring 17 points and Pierce adding 10, Boston built a 58-35 halftime lead, and unlike Game 2 when they let the Lakers trim a 24-point lead to two in the fourth quarter before recovering, the Celtics never stopped.

They pushed their lead to 31 in the third, and with Boston still up by 29 after three, plastic sheets started going up in the Celtics' locker room in preparation for a champagne celebration.

No team had to work harder for a championship than these Celtics, who were playing in their record 26th postseason game after being pushed to seven games by Atlanta and Cleveland before taking care of Detroit in six to win the Eastern Conference title.

They entered Game 6 slowed by injuries as Pierce, Kendrick Perkins (shoulder) and Rondo (ankle) were less than 100 percent. There was also uncertainty surrounding Allen, who stayed behind in Los Angeles following Game 5 after his youngest son became ill and was diagnosed with diabetes. The Celtics needed three planes to get back from L.A. and didn't get home until late Monday night.

But there were no excuses, and just as they had while winning 66 games during the regular season, the Celtics got plenty of help from their bench as P.J. Brown, James Posey, Leon Powe and rookie Glen "Big Baby" Davis came in and contributed.

It was a group effort by this gang in green, which bonded behind Rivers, who borrowed an African word ubuntu (pronounced Ooh-BOON-too) and roughly means "I am, because we are" in English, as the Celtics' unifying team motto.

The Celtics gave the Lakers a 12-minute crash course of ubuntu in the second quarter.

Boston outscored Los Angeles 34-19, getting 11 field goals on 11 assists. The Celtics toyed with the Lakers, outworking the Western Conference's best inside and out and showing the same kind of heart that made Boston the center of pro basketball's universe in the '60s.

House and Posey made 3-pointers to put the Celtics ahead by 12 points and baskets by Pierce, Garnett and Rondo put Boston ahead by 18.

In the final minute, Garnett floated in the lane, banked in a one-handed runner and was fouled. His free throw made it 56-35, and after Perkins scored, the Celtics ran to the locker room leading by 23.

On his way off the floor, Garnett screamed, "That's that."

And so it was.

Pemimpin MIC Johor Ditahan Kes Bunuh Adun

French Sent Packing As Italy Set Up Spain Classic

Italy beat 10-man France at Zurich's sold-out Letzigrund stadium to advance to the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 thanks to Holland's win over Romania.

Andrea Pirlo put the world champions in front in the 25th minute when converting from the penalty spot after Eric Abidal had brought down Luca Toni inside the area.

Abidal was shown a straight red card, leaving the French with a mountain to climb following the earlier loss of Franck Ribery to injury.

Italy led but were still made to sweat before Daniele De Rossi's 62nd minute free-kick took a deflection off Thierry Henry and struck the back of the net.

The turn of events completed a terrible tournament for Les Bleus, who were held to goalless draw against Romania in their Group C opener before being hammered 4-1 by Holland.

Italy, who finish second behind the Dutch in their pool, take on Group D winners Spain on Sunday in Vienna but the Azzurri will have to do without key players Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso, both of who were booked tonight earning suspensions.

France coach Raymond Domenech dropped captain Lilian Thuram, who looked sluggish against Holland, with Abidal taking his spot in defence. But the move backfired.

France did have the better start, earning two corners in the opening minutes but it was Italy who should have taken the lead when Toni failed to capitalise on Abidal's poor clearance and fired wide of the near post.

Domenech was forced to make his first substitution shortly after when Ribery sustained a left ankle injury and had to be stretchered off the pitch, with Samir Nasri taking his place.

Claude Makelele was then needed to make a vital clearance at the far post from Christian Panucci's close-range header as Italy got closer.

Karen Benzema's powerful strike from the edge of the area went inches wide of Gianluigi Buffon's near post and in the 21st minute, Pirlo played a one-two with Antonio Cassano before playing a wonderful ball inside the box to Simone Perrotta, who was unable to control the pass.

Disaster struck for Les Bleus seconds later.

Slovakian referee Lubos Michel pointed to the penalty spot and Pirlo coolly struck to the top hand corner.

The Italians made sure to impose their numerical superiority after Abidal's sending off and should have extended their lead by the half-hour mark but Toni wasted three good chances, much to the relief of the French fans.

The Azzurri's failure to capitalise on their opportunities could have cost them dearly as, shortly after, France almost equalised.

Jeremy Toulalan's precise pass found Thierry Henry, who surged inside the area before firing inches wide of the far post.

France keeper Gregory Coupet then provided a stunning save to deflect Fabio Grosso's free-kick onto his far post.

France did not give up but although they showed plenty of character, they failed to find the finishing touch to level the score before half-time.

Les Bleus picked up where they left off after the re-start and Benzema fired wide off the far post before Henry's effort forced Buffon to dive to his left.

News that Holland had taken the lead in the other group game in Bern reverberated around the stadium.

But it failed to inspire the Azzurri, who had mustered little after the break and were lucky to extend their lead in the 62nd minute.

De Rossi's free-kick saw the ball deflect off Henry's left foot and deceive Coupet, who had dived towards the right post and into the back of the net.

France could have got back into the game in the 73rd minute but Buffon made a stunning one-handed save to deny Benzema's curled effort.

Despite their opponents' brave attempts, Italy held on for a crucial victory

Source: ESPN

Player Ratings: France 0-2 Italy

FRANCE

Coupet: 8 – Has been criticised this tournament but tonight he was superb, helping to keep the score down with a brilliant tip onto the post from Grosso, and another save onto the woodwork from Toni in injury time.

Clerc: 6 – Not too bad defensively, and did not disgrace himself against Cassano. Provided nothing going forward though.

Abidal: 4 – Shocking decision by Domenech to play him at centre back. The game was lost when he gave away a penalty and got himself sent off. I wonder what Philippe Mexes must be thinking sitting on his settee in Rome.

Gallas: 5 – Struggled to cope with Toni’s strength, and was only let off by the striker’s dreadful finishing. A bad example to his team-mates also. How he is captain of Arsenal I do not know.

Evra: 5.5 – Certainly not the same outstanding player for country that he is for his club. Seemed disinterested at times. Was he playing for his manager?

Makelele: 5.5 – One of the greatest holding midfielders of all time, but at the age of 35 his time is now up. It is time to pass over the baton.

Toulalan: 7.5 – Excellent. Did virtually everything in midfield for France, and created the team’s best chance for Henry. One of the few French players who was really up for the game.

Ribery: N/A – Started brightly before picking up what looked a serious injury after just eight minutes. His departure was a massive blow.

Govou: 4 – Virtually anonymous. Govou shouldn’t have even made the French squad, let alone the team. Simply a disgrace that David Trezeguet was left at home.

Henry: 6.5 – Tried his best, and caused the Italians some problems at times. However he missed a fine chance to equalise at 0-1, and had the misfortune of deflecting De Rossi’s free kick into his own net.

Benzema: 7 – A bright spark up-front for France. Always looked the most likely player to score, and would have hit the back of the net if it wasn’t for a world class save from Buffon.

Nasri: N/A – Replaced the injured Ribery but only lasted 16 minutes before he was withdrawn for Boumsong following Abidal’s sending off.

Boumsong: 6 – Had a nervy first five minutes after coming on, but in truth he didn’t do too bad given the circumstances.

Anelka: 6 –Made no impact on the game following his late introduction.

ITALY

Buffon: 8 – Confirmed his status as the best goalkeeper in the world with a simply magnificent fingertip save from Benzema.

Zambrotta: 7.5 – Bombed up and down the right flank, particularly in the first half. Back to something near his best following his mistake against Romania.

Panucci: 6.5 – A calming influence in defence. Offered some tactical organisation in the absence of Cannavaro. Almost scored with a header too.

Chiellini: 6.5 – Another committed display from Chiellini, who showed his typical leadership qualities. Made one mistake in letting Henry through but he was not made to pay.

Grosso: 7 – Not as impressive as in his first two games, but still did very well, and almost scored when his free kick crashed off the post.

Gattuso: 7 – Surprisingly good in the first half, he was simply more up for the game than the French. Tired as the match wore on. Booked and will miss the quarter final against Spain.

Pirlo: 8 – Simply on another planet in the first half. Scored the penalty, dictated the play, and one through ball to Perrotta was pure genius. Also got booked and will be a big miss against Spain.

De Rossi: 9 – An absolute colossus in the centre of midfield. This was the De Rossi who was the best player in Serie A last season. Scored a fortuitous goal, but he deserved this luck. A beast.

Perrotta: 6 – A little off the pace, but once again he provided some much needed balance to the Italian midfield.

Cassano: 7 – Drifted in an out of the game, but had his moments, including one stunning back heeled through ball to Zambrotta. Will need to bring some more effectiveness into his game, even if he is clearly a better choice than Del Piero.

Toni: 6.5 – Held the ball up well, and won the penalty, but he could have had a double hat-trick tonight so awful was his finishing. I have never seen a striker scuff so many shots in one game. Looked exhausted at the end - could the long season have taken its toll?

Substitutes

Ambrosini: 6 – Slightly bemusing decision by Donadoni to bring him on for Pirlo, but it seemed to work in quelling France's strong start to the second half.

Camoranesi: 6 – Never really got into the game during his limited time on the field, although he had one shot deflected wide.

Aquilani: N/A – No time to make an impact.

Mahkamah Putus Kerusi DUN Sanglang Dikosongkan

Abdullah diwakili peguam K Jegathesan.

Chelsea Chasing Croatia Star

Chelsea are the latest name to be linked with a summer swoop for Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic, who has already attracted strong interest from some of Europe’s heavyweights…

The 20-year-old has been one of Croatia’s standouts at EURO 2008 thus far, more than holding his own in a midfield containing the likes of Luka Modric and Niko Kranjcar.

The Schalke playmaker has been pushed out to the right side of midfield by Slaven Bilic, where his technique, vision and link play have attracted significant attention.

Juventus have tagged the former FC Basel man as a potential successor to Czech legend Pavel Nedved, while Internazionale have also expressed an interest.

And now The Sun reports that Chelsea have been checking out the Swiss-born Croat, who is expected to cost around ₤12million.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been in Austria to watch his native Russia compete in Group D, and will no doubt have kept a close eye Rakitic’s efforts as Croatia topped Group B.

Incoming Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari may also get the chance to have a good hard look at the exciting youngster, as his Portugal side could well meet the Vatreni in the semi-finals.

The Cat and The Bear: Best Friends Who Simply Can't Bear To Be Apart

The Daily Mail brings us this lovely story of Muschi, the cat and Maeuschen, the bear from the Berlin Zoo. The two met 8 years ago and they've been best friends ever since.

The two were only separated once and it was hell for the both of them. Last October, Maeuschen was transferred to a cage while her living space is being renovated. Muschi stayed by the bear's cage all day and all night. The zookeepers finally decided to let Muschi inside Maeuschen's cage. The two immediately had a quick cuddle and now they're happy again.

The zookeepers said they do absolutely everything together. They will both be released back into the living space this month.

But where Muschi, a normal black domestic cat, came from remains a mystery.

'She appeared from nowhere in 2000 and we decided to leave them together because they got on so well,' Mr. Heiner Kloes, a member of the Zoo Management Board, said.

Lampard Is Number One Target - Moratti

Inter president Massimo Moratti admits that Frank Lampard is their number one target and he has closed the door on Ricardo Quaresma by claiming his price tag is "Absurd".

The Nerazzurri are currently strengthening their side ahead of next season's Champions League challenge. Moratti is hoping Jose Mourinho builds a squad capable of achieving glory in Europe and he admits that Frank Lampard will be the key to obtaining the success he is looking for.

“Lampard? We like him a lot and he is our number one target,” Moratti told Corriere Dello Sport.

“Mourinho likes Lampard and we all know he's a great player.

“Has there been contact with Chelsea? I believe so but I am not sure just yet.”

Moratti also spoke about Deco, Aquilani and Quaresma and the Inter chief believes Deco is possible but he has closed the door on the Roma and Porto duo.

“Deco has the right characteristics to play at Inter, but we can't take them all,” said the chief.

“As for Aquilani, I think Juve are after him too. “Quaresma? I think €40m is absurd amount that we are not looking to spend.”

“Ronaldo? He's another player who costs so little.”

Reports in Italy have suggested that Luis Felipe Scolari will take Deco to Chelsea and thus this could force out Lampard.

It seems highly likely that Inter will be on standby in order to swoop for the England international if he is no longer a part of the club's plans.

Petronas Chief: Report is Public

By WONG SAI WAN

KUALA LUMPUR (The Star): Petronas has been publishing its annual report for the past 18 years and it is easily available, including on its website, said its president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican.

“We print 5,000 copies of the report every year even though we are legally required to publish only two. We distribute the report to the Parliament library, ministries and even the media,” he said in an interview.

Replying to queries by various quarters that the national petroleum corporation’s accounts were not made public, Hassan said yesterday that this was not true and it was just that certain people “refused to look for iteven though it is easily available.”

”If they cannot find one of the 5,000 copies we've printed, then they should have searched our website under the heading 'Investors Relations' in the Corporate webpage.

“The accounts from 2002 to last year are listed there.

“We have got nothing to hide. When I joined the corporation in 1990, I told my then boss the late Tan Sri Azizan (Zainul Abidin) that we have to publish an annual report if we are to be a global petroleum player,” he added.

A copy of the 2007 annual report was made available to The Star last April. The 165-page report has 84 pages dedicated to Petronas’ financial statements.

The report not only states the accounts but also gives five-year financial highlights, review of its business and even its corporate sustainability targets, including its role in protecting the environment.

Hassan said the standard of the report surpassed the requirements of the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

“We behave like a public-listed company in publishing our report. I do not understand why people say that our report is not made public.

“By law all companies are required to submit their accounts to the commission and if they cannot get a copy of our report then they should have extracted a copy from the commission,” he added.

Opposition leaders and several Barisan Nasional backbenchers had called for Petronas’ accounts to be made public.

Some, including Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, had claimed that Petronas’ accounts were secret.

The calls were made following the government’s decision to raise the price of petrol by 78 sen to RM2.70 per litre and diesel by RM1 to RM2.58 per litre.

MAS Terminates Travel Privileges for AirAsia CEO

By LISA GOH

PETALING JAYA (The Star): The war of words between AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines seems to have moved to a personal level with the latter terminating discount benefits for the former's group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes.

In a letter dated May 28, MAS managing director Datuk Seri Idris Jala said the MAS management team had decided it was “best to withdraw” Fernandes' travel privileges following protest letters from many MAS staff.

“I thought I should let you know that there have been numerous complaints from MAS staffers questioning the special privileges granted to you since 2006.

“Many of them feel hurt and frustrated with what they read in the news ... in the wake of your various negative statements about Malaysia Airlines,” he said in the letter.

Fernandes said he had been enjoying 50% discounts for first/business class and 75% for economy class. He said he never used the 75% discount as it was only for domestic routes which he flew on AirAsia.

When contacted, Fernandes said he felt surprised when he received the letter “about three weeks ago”.

He explained that discounted or free seats were a courtesy offered to fellow airline chief executive officers and this was practised even between the “bitterest of enemies”.

“We also offer free seats to Idris, but he’s never taken up the offer,” he said. That offer to Idris, he said, would not be withdrawn.

Asked if he was offended by MAS’ withdrawal, he replied: “No, just a little disappointed.”

“I never complained when MAS launched its free fares promotion. It is nothing personal and I will continue to ask for a level playing field.”

“I'd like to say that MAS has the best crew and I've always been treated warmly by MAS staff. They have always paid me utmost compliments on what we’ve done with AirAsia.

“I’ve always preferred to fly with MAS but I guess all good things must come to an end,” he said.

He said he received 75% discounts from Cathay Pacific and Qantas Airlines, and flew free with Virgin Airlines.

MAS confirmed this move.

“We've provided the travel privilege out of goodwill since 2006 in response to Tony’s request for interline facility for his own travel on our international routes although AirAsia does not have an interline agreement with Malaysia Airlines,” Idris said.

The statement added that according to industry practice, “only airlines with interlining agreements will consider granting such travel privileges for airline employees”.

Ballack Fires Germany Into Next Round

Austria 0-1 Germany

A thunderous free kick from captain Michael Ballack early in the second half proved enough to see Germany through to the next round and a clash with Portugal.

Austria played well enough but were unable to put the finishing touch on any of their better moves. The host go out, while the Germans progress.

Germany secured the result they needed at the Ernst Happel Stadion as a Michael Ballack free kick saw them to a 1-0 victory and a clash with Portugal on Thursday.

Joseph Hickersberger made three changes. Hiden came in for the suspended Prödl, while in midfield new Bochum signing Fuchs came in for Leitgeb. Linz in attack went out, with Hoffer chosen.

Joachim Löw made just one change with Arne Friedrich in at full back for Marcell Jansen, which meant that Lahm switched to left back. Podolski stayed on the left of midfield with Gomez and Klose given another opportunity up front.

First Half

Austria kicked off the first half and straight away attacked down the left hand side with Fritz and Friedrich having to combine well to clear the early danger as the vociferous home crowd cheered their team on.

Both sides had set up with an attacking formation with Austria beginning with a 4-3-3. Germany’s first opportunity to attack arrived after five minutes after Stranzl lost possession to Podolski, but Fritz then wasted the ball on the edge of the area.

A minute later Germany wasted a glorious chance to open the scoring. Miroslav Klose burst down the right hand side and with a lack of a challenge; he squared the ball to Gomez, who just had to tap the ball in.

The Stuttgart striker however made a real hash of it and allowed Garics to clear. It was an unbelievable miss from a player who had so far failed to live up to the huge expectations of him.

The early pressure was taking place in the Austrian half, and the hosts were being limited to sporadic counter attacks. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Germany were finding it difficult to find the space as a well drilled Austria dropped deep.

The Austrians did get a whiff of the German goal after 20 minutes following a through ball to Hoffer. One-on-one with Jens Lehmann, the forward was however denied by the out-rushing keeper.

That represented the start of a little period of pressure from Austria as Rene Aufhauser was next to fire an effort in on goal. Lehmann had to dive down alertly to parry the ball away for a corner. Three minutes later and Jürgen Macho had to produce an equally impressive save from a low Podolski shot.

On 40 minutes a little spat between Joachim Löw and Joseph Hickersberger on the sidelines saw referee Mejuto Gonzalez send both trainers to the stands.

Second Half

Right at the start of the second half Metzelder lost possession midway inside his own half and Hoffer took control to bear down on the German goal. Fortunately for Germany Per Mertesacker got back to clear the danger.

Germany then took the lead on 49 minutes with captain Michael Ballack firing in the first direct free kick of the whole tournament. Andreas Ivanschitz fouled Philipp Lahm and was rightly booked. From around 26 meters, Ballack fired in an unstoppable shot to hand the Germans the lead and knock the stuffing out of Austria.

With Austria reeling Germany pressed forward and were close to a second on 55 minutes when Ballack fed Podolski well. The Bayern forward however pulled his shot just wide.

Austria then looked to have recovered from the shock of the goal and started to put the Germans more and more under pressure. Joachim Löw took off the below-par Mario Gomez for Thomas Hitzlsperger, while Hickersberger sent on both Kienast and Säumel.

On 75 minutes Klose managed to get clear of his opposition player, but was culpable of a poor shoot that caused Macho no worries. Austria were playing well enough but as throughout the tournament lacked the cutting edge up front.

On 81 minutes impressive full back Garics very nearly put through his own net as he tried to head clear a Torsten Frings corner. Jürgen Macho was on hand to rescue the situation.

Right at the end Germany should have wrapped things up when the worked themselves a three on one opportunity, but Neuville was too selfish and the chance went begging.

Goals:

0-1 Ballack (49)

Yellow Cards: Stranzl (13), Hoffer (31), Ivanschitz (48)

Austria: Macho, Garics, Stranzl, Hiden (Leitgeb 55), Pogatetz, Aufhauser (Säumel 63), Fuchs, Ivanschitz, Korkmaz, Harnik (Kienast 67), Hoffer

Germany: Lehmann, Friedrich, Mertesacker, Metzelder, Lahm, Frings, Ballack, Fritz (Borowski 93), Podolski (Neuville 83), Klose, Gomez (Hitzlsperger 60)

Player Ratings: Austria 0-1 Germany

AUSTRIA

Macho: 7.5- The Austrian keeper had a good game pulling off good saves particularly in the second half from Miroslav Klose. He couldn’t really do a lot to stop Ballack’s free kick goal.

Stranzl: 6.5- The Spartak Moscow defender had a solid enough game at the back, but was always occupied in defence.

Hiden: 6- Making his 50th appearance for Austria in place of the suspended Prödl, Hiden played well enough, but was ultimately the one to be sacrificed in the second half as Hickersberger looked to make offensive changes.

Pogatetz: 7- There was no player more fired up than Pogatetz and he had a decent game at the back, but alas it proved not enough.

Garics: 7.5- The Napoli right back had a very good game as was arguably Austria’s best player. Solid enough at the back and got forward well.

Aufhauser: 6.5- Was Austria’s Torsten Frings equivalent in the first half and even forced a good save from Jens Lehmann. He was sacrificed in the second period as Austria looked to bring on more offensive alternatives.

Ivanschitz: 6-With Austria looking for a top performance from captain and star man Andreas Ivanschitz, he didn’t really live up to expectations.

Fuchs: 6- New Bochum signing Christian Fuchs started well but then rather faded from the game especially after the German goal.

Harnik: 5.5- The Werder Bremen man was unable to get one over his team mates Mertesacker, Fritz and Frings and was also unable to back up his pre-match comments with action on the pitch.

Hoffer: 5.5- Ran around lots and had one half chance but not effective enough to cause an immobile German centre back dup too many problems.

Korkmaz: 5- He never really got going and had a rather disappointing game.

Substitutes:

Kienast: Looked lively when brought on but couldn’t make a breakthrough

Säumel: Played well enough, but not able to impose himself.

Leitgeb: Brought on to provide a more offensive option, but didn’t have any real impact.

GERMANY

Lehmann: 7- The German keeper was not overly tested, but whenever he was he dealt with it well.

Lahm: 8- Switched to left back, Bayern full back Lahm had a great game. Secure at the back, he was a real threat going forward.

Mertesacker: 7-Still looks a little shaky at times but not unduly threatened by a rather toothless Austria attack.

Metzelder: 6.5- Werder defender Mertesacker was secure and solid again and was on hand when called upon to clear the danger poised by the Austrians.

Friedrich: 6.5- Friedrich had a fine game coming in for Marcell Jansen and Jogi Löw will have a decision to make regarding the Portugal game.

Frings: 7.5- Frings had another fine game doing all the donkey work in front of the back four allowing the likes of Ballack, Podolski and Fritz to get forward.

Ballack: 8- Captain Ballack stepped up to the mark tonight after his disappointing showing against Croatia. There was only going to be one player to step up and thump that free kick past Macho.

Fritz: 6.5- Another average game from Fritz but he seems to retain the confidence of national team trainer Jogi Löw.

Podolski: 7.5- Still out on the left wing Podolski had a fine game although didn’t add to his three goals so far. Even though not in his favoured advanced role, the Bayern forward looked more dangerous than both Klose and Gomez.

Klose: 6-Ran down the channels well and chased the defenders down, but still a rather anonymous performance from Klose.

Gomez: 6- Much hyped before the tournament, Stuttgart forward Gomez looked nowhere near the most prolific German striker of the past to seasons. He missed an absolute sitter in the first half as was replaced with club mate Thomas Hitzlsperger in the second half.

Substitutes:

Hitzlsperger: 6- Brought on for disappointing club mate Gomez and had a steady game.

Neuville: n/a- Wasted a great opportunity in stoppage time to put the result beyond doubt but wasted it.

Borowski: n/a- Not on the field long enough to make an impression.

Klasnic Makes It Perfect Three For Croatia

Poland 0-1 Croatia

Ivan Klasnic became the first player to feature and score in a European Championship after a kidney transplant as a make-shift Croatia side edged Poland 1-0 to make it three wins in three and set up a quarter-final with Turkey...

Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic became the first kidney transplant patient to score at a World Cup or European championships when he got the only goal in Croatia's 1-0 win over Poland in their Euro 2008 Group B match here on Monday.

Victory ensured that Croatia finished with a perfect nine points in the group and set them fair for their quarter-final with Turkey in Vienna on Friday - for the Poles - who co-host the next finals with Ukraine - it means they leave for home with just a point.

It also leaves their veteran Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker without a win at a European Championships or World Cup finals.

Poland pressed early on desperately in search of an early goal to give them some hope, but it was the Croats who had the better and sharper chances.

First to rattle the cage of the nervous Poles was Danijel Pranjic, who was put clear on the left but his curling effort drifted wide of Polish 'keeper Artur Boruc's far post.

The Croats then went even closer in the 19th minute as Ivan Rakitic once again showed how dangerous a crosser of the ball he is - his deflected cross against the Germans had led to Jens Lehmann fumbling the ball and gifting the Croatians a goal - as his freekick was met by central defender Hrvoje Vejic, though his header went narrowly past the post.

Croat coach Slaven Bilic had to make a change 25 minutes into the encounter as he was forced to take off the injured Dario Knezevic and replace him with Manchester City's Vedran Corluka.

Croatia didn't let up at all as Klasnic - also the first player to appear at a major finals having had a kidney transplant - was released. But with only Boruc to beat, he found like many before him that the Celtic goalkeeper was equal to the task.

Boruc must have seen his value in the market rise enormously here during the tournament and yet again he was Poland's saviour with 10 minutes remaining from the break he once again got down to deny the Croatians, this time Pranjic.

Poland weren't helping their cause by giving the ball away and Jerko Leko was just wide with a long range low effort from outside the penalty box after the ball was lazily given to him by Polish midfielder Mariusz Lewandowski.

Boruc might as well not have had a defence as in time added on in the first-half Klasnic turned his marker and zeroed into the box but his shot was blocked by the Polish goalkeeper and Rakitic was unable to keep his follow-up down.

However, Boruc was like former English King Canute unable to keep the waves out permanently and Klasnic was to justifiably and emotionally slot home brilliantly from the left side of the box after the outstanding Pranjic pulled the ball back for him.

That seemed to spark some life from the Poles as first Marek Saganowski - himself no stranger to health problems as he was told he would never walk again after a serious motorcycle accident in the 1990's - had a firm header well saved by Vedran Runje and then Brazilian-born striker Roger Guerreiro turned brilliantly but saw his shot go wide of the post.

The Poles fire was doused really by that stage till a fine piece of individual skill by Euzebiusz Smolarek - who surprisingly hadn't started the match - saw him turn smartly and fire a curling effort just wide.

Poland were denied a point three minutes from time as Runje denied Tomasz Zahorski, running out of his goal to block him with his legs.

Federal Court allows Anwar to challenge his 1998 sacking

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court here unanimously gave the green light to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to challenge the constitutionality of his sacking from Cabinet posts almost 10 years ago by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Following this outcome, the Federal Court will determine two questions of law – whether Anwar’s sacking was unconstitutional or not, and whether Dr Mahathir could sack his deputy, without first advising the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The court has yet to fix the date to hear Anwar’s final appeal. Anwar was ordered by the court to file the record of appeal within 14 days.

On Dec 23, 1998, the High Court dismissed Anwar’s suit against Dr Mahathir and the Government, to summarily strike out his application for an order to declare Dr Mahathir’s decision to dismiss him from the Cabinet posts on Sept 2, 1998 was unlawful and null and void.

The Court of Appeal had held that Anwar’s sacking from the Cabinet posts was lawfully executed by Dr Mahathir since the power to appoint and dismiss ministers lay with the prime minister. Bernama

Petronas Urges Public Not To Join E-mail Campaign

KUALA LUMPUR (The Star): Petronas has urged the public not to join an e-mail campaign to boycott its products because it will not affect fuel prices.

Its president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican said Petronas was not the largest retailer of fuel in the country as it only has about 800 stations nationwide.

“Any form of boycott will only hurt the station owners, the small and medium-seized enterprises that supply the stations with their products and the shareholders of Petronas Dagangan – many of whom are pensioners,” he said in an interview.

Petronas stations account for about 30% of fuel sold in the country. The largest retail station owner is Shell with over 1,200 stations.

An e-mail has been circulating calling on the public to boycott Petronas stations and its products. The e-mail claimed that a similar boycott was carried out in the United States against another petroleum company and it succeeded in forcing the company to reduce its prices.

Hassan said that Petronas had no say over fuel prices as they were determined by the Government.

He said Petronas as a corporation would not be unduly affected by such a boycott as Petronas Dagangan accounted for less than 5% of its revenue.

Hassan also said the country had to import 80,000 barrels of petrol every day because the refineries in the country did not produce enough.

“We are an exporter of diesel and jet fuel because of the composition of the Tapis sweet light crude that we produce. Any boycott will only benefit the foreign oil companies who operate here.”

It is learnt that some foreign oil companies own the stations directly from overseas even though they have local units here.

Asked why Petronas was not making more money now that the Government had increased the pump prices, Hassan said oil companies always sells fuel at market rate and it was the Government that paid the subsidies to these firms.

“Our profits remain the same and we do not benefit from any increase or reduction of fuel prices.”

Palacio Saves Argentina's Blushes

Argentina needed an injury-time strike from substitute Rodrigo Palacio to snatch them a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier...

Argentina fielded a very strong side, and started extremely strongly in-front of their home fans, who wanted to be treated to a feast of goals.

But as the half progressed Argentina seemed to lack imagination, and besides Estudiantes de La Plata midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron the rest of the team played well below their potential.

However, Alfio Basile's side still looked dangerous when moving forward, particularly through Lionel Messi, and it seemed just a matter of time before they would go ahead.

But it wasn't to be, Ecuador were very strong in the defense, and at times outplayed the Argentines, who found it very difficult moving forward.

Ecuador's attacking options were limited, but each time Joffre Guerron and Carlos Tenorio moved forward they looked extremely dangerous.

After the break Argentina seemed more determined to get a first goal, and second half substitute Fernando Gago provided the midfield with more options.

Juan Roman Riquelme had the opportunity to put the Argentines ahead with two very inviting free-kicks, but both of his efforts flashed wide.

By now, and with less than thirty minutes remaining on the clock, the Argentines were desperate, and they resorted to pumping long balls up the field to find the likes of Messi and Julio Cruz, but they didn't have any luck.

Atletico Madrid ace Sergio Aguero had a couple of opportunities to put Argentina ahead, but he was off target.

From the run of play Ecuador went ahead when Patricio Irrutia finished off a sensational attacking move with a powerful drive that went in off the crossbar.

Argentina were shell-shocked, and although they moved forward in numbers they lacked precision. It seemed that Argentina were in for a humiliating home loss at the Monumental stadium.

However, in the 93rd minute of the second half, Rodrigo Palacio, who had only entered the field minutes earlier, latched onto a through ball and beat Jose Cevallos with a powerful effort.

Argentina were lucky to snatch a point from a match in which they were outplayed during long periods. The Argentines played extremely poorly, and will need to improve a great deal to have any chance of picking up a positive result when they meet Brazil in Belo Horizonte next Wednesday.

Player Ratings: Argentina 1-1 Ecuador

Argentina

Roberto Abbondanzieri: 6 - Didn't have much work to do. Had no chance in Ecuador's fantastic goal.

Gabriel Heinze: 6 - It wasn't his best display by any stretch. Was strong in the air, but couldn't find the room to move forward. Was beaten by Joffre Guerron on numerous occasions.

Nicolas Burdisso: 5.5 - Did well to handle Ecuador's strikers, but was very imprecise when it came to pushing the ball forward. Looked very nervous in the second half.

Martin Demichelis: 5 - An ordinary display from the Bayern Munich man. He lacked quality in most areas of his game, and should have been replaced.

Javier Zanetti: 5 - Played well below his potential. Looked nervous when moving forward, and just had no influence on the match. Needs to improve if he wants to keep his place in the starting eleven.

Juan Roman Riquelme: 4.5 - A disappointing performance from the Boca Juniors playmaker. Couldn't get involved in the match, and was reduced to two dangerous free-kicks.

Maxi Rodriguez: 6 - Despite his determination, he struggled to get into the match, and looked lost in the midfield. Was replaced for the second half.

Javier Mascherano: 7 - Played a consistent match. Won several balls in the midfield, and made some fine tackles. A good overall display while it lasted.

Juan Sebastian Veron: 7 - Pulled the strings in the midfield, particularly in the first half. After the break his influence faded a great deal, and he was replaced because of injury.

Sergio Aguero: 4 - Wasted a couple of good opportunities to find the back of the net. Failed to make an impact and looked selfish at times.

Lionel Messi: 6.5 - Demonstrated flashes of why he is one of the most gifted strikers in the game. At times got past his defenders with ease, but was effectively kept out of the match.

Substitutes:

Fernando Gago: 6

Julio Cruz: 5

Rodrigo Palacio: 8 - He may have been on the field for only a few minutes, but he scored Argentina's much-need equalizer in the final minute of injury time.

Ecuador

Jose Cevallos: 8.5 - Looked very secure during the match and made a number of fine saves. Perhaps could have done better to keep out Rodrigo Palacio's equalizer.

Giovanny Espinoza: 8 - A very solid performance in the defense. The veteran won every ball in the air and broke down a number of Argentine attacks.

Omar De Jesus: 7 - Looked fast down the wings, and often came back to help his fellow defenders. An all-round good performance.

Isaac Mina: 7 - At times had trouble closing down the likes of Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi, but did well considering the circumstances.

Ivan Hurtado: 8.5 - A brilliant display by the hard working defender. His experience was vital as Ecuador put on a memorable display.

Luis Valencia: 7.5 - The talented winger made the most of his speed, helping his side out as they mounted dangerous counterattacks. At times the Argentines couldn't keep up with him.

Segundo Castillo: 7 - Did Ecuador's dirty work in the midfield, even if it was often difficult to deal with the speed of the Argentines. Played an intelligent match.

Joffre Guerron: 9 - Without doubt Ecuador's most dangerous player on the pitch. Was a constant menace to the Argentine defense, with his speed and trickery. Another great performance.

Walter Ayovi: 7 - Was kept out of the match for much of the first half, but when he was called upon he responded with great efficiency.

Patricio Urrutia: 9 - Capped off a remarkable display with a fantastic goal that should have given Ecuador the three points. Has become a vital ingredient for the success of the side.

Carlos Tenorio: 7 - Looked very dangerous when moving forward, especially on counterattacks. Created huge problems for the Argentine defense.

Paraguay Ease Past Brazil

Paraguay remain in top position of the South American World Cup qualifying group after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Brazil in Asuncion, Paraguay...

Paraguay started the stronger of the two sides, and piled heavy pressure on the Brazilians as they looked to get an early goal at a packed Defensores del Chaco stadium in Asuncion.

Carlos Dunga's side slowly came more into the match, but they never looked dangerous when moving forward, as their strikers --Robinho and Luis Fabiano-- were kept out of the game by the well disciplined Paraguayan defense.

Club America star Salvador Cabanas almost put Paraguay ahead in the 24th minute when his fierce drive from just inside of the area rocketed off Julio Cesar's right post.

However, two minutes later Roque Santa Cruz put Paraguay in front when he tapped the ball into the back of the net at the back post from a corner kick.

Towards the end of the first half the Brazilians began to press, and former Santos teammates Diego and Robinho linked up nicely when moving forward.

Paraguay went into the break with a narrow, but well deserved lead, in a half where they dominated the Brazilians for long periods.

Two minutes into the second period Paraguay were reduced to ten men when Dario Veron was dismissed after a violent tackle from behind on Robinho.

But this didn't seem to affect the Paraguayans as seconds later they broke on a swift counterattack through Santa Cruz who had an effort blocked by Julio Cesar before Cabanas poked the ball in from close range.

Minutes later Cabanas rounded Julio Cesar and struck the cross-bar, with the rebound going to Santa Cruz who had an effort saved off the line by a Brazilian defender.

Brazil came more into the match in the last fifteen minutes, and almost pulled a goal back when Manchester United midfielder Anderson had a long range effort well saved by Justo Villar in the Paraguay goal.

In second half injury time Anderson had another powerful long range effort pushed out by Villar. This was the last action of a very intense match.

Next week Paraguay will be up against Bolivia in the altitude of La Paz, while Brazil will be after the three points when they clash with archrivals Argentina in Belo Horizonte.

Player Ratings: Paraguay 2-0 Brazil

Paraguay

Justo Villar: 7.5 - Made a couple of good long range saves. Always looked very secure and did well to organize his defense.

Denis Caniza: 8 - Played an outstanding match, was very consistent in defense and even moved forward on occasions.

Julio Cesar Caceres: 8.5 - The rock of the Paraguayan defense. The Boca Juniors centre back was extremely solid and did well to keep out Luis Fabiano.

Dario Veron: 5 - Started the match strongly, but was very aggressive, and it was obvious that sooner or later he would receive his marching orders.

Paulo Da Silva: 8 - Provided Paraguay with the necessary temperament and fighting spirit. Never lost his marker and did well when moving forward.

Jonathan Santana: 6.5 - The Argentine-born midfielder had little impact on the match, but when he was called upon he always responded.

Edgar Barreto: 7.5 - Has continued to impress for the national team. Another solid display by the hard working midfielder.

Enrique Vera: 8 - A solid display by the Liga de Quito man. He controlled the midfield, and was very creative at times. Has become instrumental for Paraguay's success.

Roque Santa Cruz: 9 - A constant menace for the Brazilian defense. The Man United bound striker opened the scoring for the Paraguayans and always looked dangerous.

Salvador Cabanas: 9.5 - The man-of-the-match! Another sensational performance from the stocky striker. Not only did he get on the score-sheet, but he struck the woodwork twice. Brilliant!

Nelson Haedo Valdez: 7 - It wasn't his best display, but he never stopped running, and beat the Brazilians with ease down the flanks.

Substitutes:

Victor Caceres: 7

Aureliano Torres: 6.5

Oscar Cardozo: n/a

Brazil

Julio Cesar: 5 - Was under constant pressure by the Paraguayan attack, but responded well when he had to. Poor positioning played a part in both of Paraguay's goals.

Maicon: 4.5 - Looked good when moving forward, but defensively he left a lot to be desired. His passing was awful at times.

Lucio: 4 - The usual fighting spirit, but he was often beaten by the likes of Santa Cruz and Cabanas. A poor performance by his standards.

Juan: 5.5 - Looked very strong in the defense, and made some terrific tackles. But he was let down by his associates.

Gilberto Silva: 5 - Continually lost his markers. He couldn't deal with the speed of the Paraguayans, especially when they broke with swift counterattacks.

Mineiro: 6 - Did his best, but couldn't match the height and strength of the Paraguayans. He was constantly pushed around.

Josue: 4 - Like Mineiro, lacked the physical presence to handle his opponents. Did well at the beginning of the match, but soon faded.

Gilberto Silva: 6 - Looked lively in the first half, with some good passing, but didn't have an impact in the second period.

Diego: 6 - An acceptable performance. He created Brazil's best attacks, but looked extremely tired in the second half.

Robinho: 7 - Displayed the usual flashes of brilliance, but found great difficulty getting past the Paraguayan defense on his own. Linked up well with former Santos teammate Diego.

Luis Fabiano: 4 - Barely got a touch of the ball. He tried his best to find space in the area, but was never supplied with the ball. Caceres completely controlled him.

Celtics 98, Lakers 103

BOS (15-10) 22 30 18 28 98
LAL (14-6) 39 16 24 24 103

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- As purple-and-gold streamers rained down, Lamar Odom shook his head in approval, Derek Fisher caressed the game ball against his chest and Kobe Bryant clapped his hands before striding from the floor.

"I love L.A." blared through the speakers and
"Not In Our House!" flashed on the scoreboard.

The P.A. announcer cried, "This is not over yet!"

The Los Angeles Lakers aren't done playing. The NBA Finals are headed East.

Bryant scored 25 points, including a decisive dunk in the final minute -- and Odom added 20 as the Lakers, playing with pride on their star-studded stage, prevented the Celtics from winning a 17th title with a 103-98 win in Game 5 on Sunday night to close to 3-2 in this restored rivalry.

"We didn't want to see any champagne popping," Odom said. "It wasn't easy. I wouldn't expect it to be."

No team has overcome a 3-1 deficit in the Finals to win a title. The first 28 failed, and now the Lakers, who blew a 24-point lead and lost Game 4 and nearly squandered a 19-point lead in Game 5, have a chance to do something extraordinary.

They'll have to win on the Celtics' parquet floor Tuesday night to force a winner-take-all Game 7, where anything is possible.

Especially with Bryant, the game's best player, on hand.

"In training camp if you told us, 'We'll give you two games that you have to win to win a world championship,' we would have taken it in a heartbeat," Bryant said. "This is a great opportunity for us."

The league's MVP and ultimate finisher isn't finished yet.

On a night when Bryant didn't have his best game, the other Lakers came up big.

Pau Gasol had 19 points and 13 rebounds, Odom had 11 rebounds and four blocks, Fisher added 15 points and Jordan Farmar came off the bench to get 11.

"We were aggressive. We played hard," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Not smart all the time, but we played hard."

Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 38 points and played all but two seconds. Kevin Garnett added 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Ray Allen had 16 points. But Boston's Big Three couldn't close out their first chance at winning it all, and now will get two cracks at home.

Following the game, Allen did not speak to the media. Celtics coach Rivers said: "Ray Allen was forced to leave Staples Center right at the conclusion of tonight's game due to a health issue with one of his children. We ask that you please respect Ray's privacy at this time, and we'll keep you up to date as best we can moving forward." Allen has a daughter, Tierra, and sons Walter Ray Allen III and Walker.

The Celtics, trying to win their first title since 1986, are consoled by the fact they are going home. They are 47-7 at TD Banknorth Garden this season.

"We wanted to go back home, but we didn't want to play," Rivers said. "But now we have to play, and we earned that right. That's why the regular season is so important. We fought for it all year. We have Game 6 at home, and that's not a bad place to be."

After scoring 15 points in the first quarter, Bryant went cold from the floor and finished just 8-of-21. But he made a big steal, poking the ball away from Pierce and streaking down to deliver a two-handed dunk with 37.4 seconds left.

"I just was kind of reading the play and I was able to get my hands on the ball and get out and get a dunk," Bryant said.

The Celtics called a timeout, superfan Jack Nicholson jumped to his feet and the scoreboard in Staples Center flashed: Not In Our House!

On Saturday, Bryant had said "this is far from over," and he could be right.

Accused of being selfish and too tough on his not-as-talented teammates, Bryant can bow to the other Lakers for sending the series back across country. Gasol, the 7-foot Spanish center criticized for being pillowy soft, didn't back down underneath and was able to get Garnett into foul trouble.

But just as they did in Game 4, when they staged the biggest comeback in Finals history, the Celtics pushed the Lakers to the brink of summer with another rally. This one fell a little short, but the outcome was still in doubt when Pierce, who grew up hating Boston like every other kid from L.A., made two free throws with 1:14 remaining to get the Celtics to 97-95.

Fisher then missed a jumper and the Celtics appeared to be in business when Pierce fought off two Lakers for a rebound. But as he dribbled toward the basket, Bryant reached around and knocked the ball away to Odom, who then fed Bryant for his slam.

Still, the Celtics wouldn't go away.

After Bryant missed one of two free throws with 16 seconds left, Eddie House nailed a 3-pointer to make it 101-98 with 14 seconds left. House then nearly stole the ensuing inbounds pass, but Bryant, sprawled out on the floor, got the ball to Fisher, who drew a desperation foul.

Fisher then made two free throws and stole Boston's last pass as Lakers fans, stunned to silence a few nights ago, left the building dreaming of seeing another improbable comeback.

This is the 11th meeting -- and first since 1987 -- between the league's two most stories franchises, and it could be headed for a crescendo befitting the matchups between Bird and Magic, McHale and Abdul-Jabbar, and Russell and West.

Before the game, Lakers coach Jackson said the only way for his team to approach a close-out game was to keep playing.

"A lot of things can happen," he said. "We're young enough and dumb enough to be able to do this."

With Bryant, they have the smarts and skills to get it done.

He made four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes and his free throw gave the Lakers a 25-15 lead. The Celtics were forced to extend their defense, and Bryant made them pay when he faked a long-range shot and fired a pass underneath to Vladimir Radmanovic to make it 29-15.

Odom, a model of inconsistency in the series, drove the lane for a hoop to put the Lakers ahead by 16, and Gasol's bucket in the final second made the overhead scoreboard read: Lakers 39, Celtics 22.

Most teams might panic. Not the Celtics. They were in a bigger hole -- 21 points -- after the first quarter in Game 4 when they staged their epic rally.

And, sure enough, back Boston came.

When Sasha Vujacic scored, the Lakers' lead bulged to 19 and the oh-so-trendy L.A. faithful were carrying on like a rowdy East coast crowd. That's when the Celtics began chipping away as Pierce scored six points and Tony Allen scored two quick baskets.

The Celtics' rally seemed short-lived when Garnett picked up his third personal, but with the Lakers unable to get anything to drop, Pierce made a layup and 3 to make it 43-39 before Odom finally ended Los Angeles nearly six-minute scoring drought.

The Lakers briefly regrouped but P.J. Brown scored on a putback and Pierce hit another 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left as the Celtics closed to 55-52 at half and bounded toward their locker just 24 minutes from a title that remains just out of reach.

Portugal Beaten As Swiss Bow Out With Pride

Switzerland 2-0 Portugal

With the other group games completed and outcomes already settled, there was little to play for except pride in Basel this evening. Hakin Yakin ensured that the Swiss fans were rewarded fro their loyalty; his double gave Switzerland their first win of the championship, ensuring that they did not finish pointless…

Luiz Felipe Scolari’s decision to rest a number of his key personnel for this encounter has threatened to disrupt Portuguese momentum for Euro 2008. A shadow Portugal side was subjected to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of hosts Switzerland, who restored national pride after an hitherto ignominious campaign.

Hakin Yakin completed a second half double to gain the win for the Swiss, assisted by Erin Derdiyok in the 71st minute, before an 85th minute penalty awarded for a foul on Tranquillo Barnetta.

Portugal made most of the early running, and should have scored the opener during the first half. Helder Postiga had a seemingly legitimate effort ruled offside and Pepe had an effort deflected onto the crossbar by Pascal Zuberbuhler.

In the second period, Nani had the guests’ best opportunity but he could only strike the post with the goal at his mercy.

Gokhan Inler was in fine form for Switzerland and tested Ricardo with a number of stinging long range drives.

Barnetta made a significant impact after his introduction, first going close at the near post and ultimately winning the penalty to secure the three points, and with them, restored Swiss pride.

First Half:

With qualification already assured, Luiz Felipe Scolari rang in the changes for his Portugal side; Only Ricardo in goal, Pepe in central defence and Paulo Ferreira at left back retained their places in the line up.

There was a farewell appearance for Pascal Zuberbuhler in goal for Switzerland, he retires on completion of the group formalities.

Even without Simao and Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal possessed potent attacking options with Ricardo Quaresma and Nani eager to impress in an otherwise meaningless fixture.

Quaresma was at the heart of the Portuguese attack; his impudent cross on eight minutes gave Helder Postiga his first chance of the game. The ex-Spurs man headed wide.

Switzerland, hoping for a dignified display with their fate already sealed, had chances of their own with Velon Behrami making an impression.

He had two opportunities in quick succession just past the quarter hour; Firstly, his shot was blocked by Fernando Meira, the stand-in Portugal captain, and just after, he had a shot through a crowded penalty area.

The Portuguese responded, Nani’s long range free-kick was deflected on target by the immense Pepe, but Zuberbuhler’s reactions were sufficient to block the shot.

The game ebbed and flowed without the urgency of previous matches, leaving space for attacks at both ends. Gokhan Inler went close shortly after, his long range drive was smartly tipped over by Ricardo.

The same Swiss player was almost responsible for his side conceding just before the half hour. Nani picked Inler’s pocket to release Postiga, who saw his angled drive blocked by Phillipe Senderos.

As the game opened up, Hakin Yakin spotted the run of Senderos with a deep set play. As the ball came over Fernando Meira’s head, the Arsenal defender failed to direct his sliding effort on target.

Yakin and Postiga swapped headed chances before Portugal were denied the opener by an offside flag.

Meira drove at the heart of the Swiss defence and played a short pass to Ricardo Quaresma. The Porto man found Postiga with a through ball, who finished smartly. The passage was ruled redundant however, thanks to an erroneous decision.

Second Half:

Nani had the first significant opportunity of a low-key second half opening. After being played through on the left wing by Ricardo Quaresma, the Manchester United winger could only strike the base of the post. Shortly after, Quaresma himself had an effort repelled by the experienced Zuberbuhler.

The Swiss took their time to settle into the second half but were dragged forward by Udinese’s Inler. The midfielder beat Miguel all ends up and crossed for Derdiyok on the hour, who saw his close range shot blocked down by Pepe.

Inler was to be involved again five minutes later, as his 25-yard drive skimmed the outside of Ricardo’s post.

The Swiss, for the first time in the encounter, looked the more capable side and stole into the ascendancy after 70 minutes. The Portuguese disrupted themselves by making a substitution and paid the price for the ensuing confusion.

A swift midfield pass found Derdiyok, who cushioned the ball to Yakin on the right side of the area. Shorn of Portuguese defensive pressure, the 31-year-old settled himself and positioned his shot through the legs of Ricardo.

Ten minutes later and the Swiss had the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot. Tranquillo Barnetta, effective after his introduction, was tripped by Fernando Meira inside the area. From the resultant spot kick, Hakin Yakin smashed the ball high to Ricardo’s right.

Ultimately, too many changes disrupted the fluency of a jittery Portugal side. With no cohesion, they struggled to make the fluid impression of which they are capable.

The Swiss, determined to send their fans home cheering will be pleased with their consolation win. In spite of the loss, Portugal top the group and will face the second place team in Group B – most likely Germany or co-hosts Austria.

Player Ratings: Switzerland 2-0 Portugal

SWITZERLAND

Zuberbuhler: 8 – Ended his international career on the perfect note. Made one superb save from Pepe, tipping his shot onto the bar. Did not put a foot wrong all night and was far, far more impressive than Benaglio who played in the first two games.

Lichtsteiner: 5 – Very shaky at right back, making a host of mistakes. Should have conceded a penalty for one mistimed challenge on Nani. Also let the winger through on goal after a mistake.

Müller: 7 – Sound performance at the back from Muller, who coped relatively comfortably with Postiga.

Senderos: 6 – Largely did ok but made one blunder, gifting a chance to Quaresma. A threat in the opposition penalty area at corners and set-pieces.

Magnin: 8 – A typically spirited performance from Magnin, who excelled against Quaresma, barely giving the wideman a sniff.

Behrami: 6.5 – Caused Ferreira a number of problems down the right in the first half. An energetic display.

Gelson: 6 – The game passed him by without too much notice, although he improved as the game wore on.

Inler: 8 – A class act in the middle-of-the-park. One superb long range shot in the first half that forced a fine save out of Ricardo. Another in the second that crashed off the post. Surely only a matter of time until he leaves Udinese for a big club.

Yakin: 9 – Excellent in the hole was the two-goal hero. Took his opener superbly and his penalty was emphatic. Good set-pieces also, and went close to scoring another with a header, only to be superbly denied by Ricardo.

Derdiyok: 6.5 – Didn’t hide and always went searching for the ball, and for this reason he created the goal for Yakin.

Vonlanthen: 5.5 – Pretty much anonymous down the left. Never got into the game and was substituted on the hour mark.

Substitutes

Barnetta: 7 – Did well after coming on. Almost scored with his first touch. Won the penalty too.

Grichting: N/A

Cabanas: N/A

PORTUGAL

Ricardo: 6.5 – A liability on crosses, something that could cost Portugal later in the tournament. Made some fine saves though, especially one from Yakin.

Miguel: 6 – Did well going forward, but defensively suspect. Went to sleep on a number of occasions.

Pepe: 7 – Quite clearly saving himself ahead of the quarter final. Glided his way through the match without breaking sweat. Hit the crossbar early on.

Alves: 6 – Coped relatively comfortably with the Swiss attack for most of the game but went AWOL for Yakin’s goal. Had a chance down the other end with a header in the first half but failed to really test Zuberbuhler.

Ferreira: 6 – Struggled against Behrami’s pace at times in the first half, picked up a yellow card for one late tackle, and was then substituted on 40 minutes in order to avoid him getting sent off.

Meira: 6 – The stand-in captain put in a committed display but seemed to tire as the game went on, and he gave away the penalty.

Veloso: 6 – Did well to close up the space in front of the back four in the first half, but was not too effective after the break.

Meireles: 5 – Did not make much impact, and was largely invisible in the middle of the park. Let Inler completely take charge in the second period.

Nani: 7 – Looked dangerous at times in the first half, and should have won a penalty. Frustrating after the break, and hit the post in a one-on-one. Needs to cut out the playacting and histrionics though. Possibly the most infuriating player to watch in world football.

Quaresma: 4 – The biggest disappointment on the pitch. Made no impact whatsoever, Magnin had him in his pocket. No chance of him ousting Simao after this performance.

Postiga: 5.5 – Further proved the point about Portugal’s lack of a quality striker. Missed one great chance in the second half.

Substitutes

Ribeiro: 6.5 – Coped better with Behrami than Ferreira did.

Moutinho: 6 – Never really got into the game during his limited time on the field.

Almeida: 6 – Same assessment as Moutinho above.

Czechs Check Out Amidst Turkish Delight

Turkey 3 Czech Republic 2

A thrilling finale saw a sensational comeback by Turkey stun the Czech Republic and send them crashing out of Euro 2008. Trailing 2-1 with less than five minutes to go the Turks scored twice through Nihat to win the game and book their place in the quarter finals.

The game began slowly, a nervy, tight affair with no hint of the drama that was to follow. The Czech Republic made the better start although Turkey gradually managed to assert themselves after a nervy beginning although chances were at a premium.

Yet slowly the openings came with Koller causing problems in the Turkish box, out muscling and out jumping Gungor and Servet. The Turks meanwhile were struggling to get their passing game going at all and Nihat and Tuncay were virtually starved of service.

The Czech Republic served notice of their intentions just after the half hour mark. Jankulovski racing forward on the left side and sending in a wicked cross which Demirel managed to grab just before Sionko pounced.

A minute later and this time Demirel was beaten as the Czechs took a deserved lead. This time the attack came from the other flank, Grygera getting forward on the right and crossing a high ball into the box for Koller to power an accurate header past the Turkish goalkeeper.

Although it had been a tight first half the Czechs undoubtedly deserved to go in at half time ahead. Their greater desire showed through and Koller in particular was causing all sorts of problems. Turkey meanwhile had largely been disappointing, failing to trouble Cech at all and in desperate need of a big second half improvement.

However, a more determined Turkey appeared for the second half. Coach Fatih Terim shaking things up by replacing Senturk with Sabri.

The chances came quickly with Turkey now looking a more committed side and possessing an urgency that had been missing from their first half performance. Arda was finally becoming more involved in the game and Petr Cech was finally called into action, saving well from a Tuncay header.

Yet just as it seemed that Turkey might be able to level the game the Czechs doubled their lead just on the hour mark. Sionko wide on the right sent in a good cross which made it all the way through to the far post where Plasil was on hand to slide it in from a tight angle.

The Czechs then had the chance to put the game out of sight but Polak’s shot hit the post and the Turks won a reprieve. Minutes later that miss looked even more vital as Turkey halved the deficit.

Sabri swept in a good cross from the right hand side which missed everyone but Arda, who was all alone coming in at the edge of the box. The youngster swept in a low shot past Cech and suddenly the game was set up for a thrilling finale.

With the score at 2-1 was a Turkish deluge and the Czechs who had previously looked so comfortable were struggling to stem the Red tide. Yet the goal when it arrived came from a mistake from the usually reliable, Petr Cech.

With less than five minutes remaining Hamit sent in a ball from the right which should have been routinely claimed by Cech. However, the goalkeeper fumbled, dropped the ball and Nihat was on hand to tap the ball in and level the game up.

With the scores level and only minutes left on the clock it looked as though the game was headed for penalties after all. Yet it was not to be, Nihat turned superbly on the edge of the box and hit a stunning shot past Cech and into the top corner to put the Turks ahead for the first time all night.

There was still more drama to come: Turkish goalkeeper Demirel was sent off in injury time for pushing Koller and Turkey, having used all their substitutes, were forced to put Tuncay in goal for the remaining seconds.

They held on for a deserved victory that their wonderful comeback deserved and will now face Croatia in the quarter finals. The Czechs meanwhile can only dwell on what might have been.

Player Ratings: Turkey 3-2 Czech Republic

TURKEY

Volkan Demirel: 4.0 - Great take from Sionko in the first half but Koller’s header had too much on it for him to keep out, likewise Plasil’s shot for the second goal. Foolishly sent off late on for pushing Koller.

Hamit Altintop: 7.0 - Like the rest of his team a quiet first half was followed by a far more adventurous second. Put some glorious balls into the box and it was his cross that Cech dropped for the second Turkish equaliser.

Emre Gungor: 5.0 - The centre back was only winning his second cap and it showed. Found the going tough against Koller and went off injured just after the hour mark.

Servet Cetin: 6.5 - A nervy start but he improved although he found Koller difficult to handle and couldn’t get near him for the goal. Made a nuisance of himself in the opposition box.

Hakan Balta: 6.5 - Got forward more in the second half and tried to offer an attacking thrust as the game wore on and the Turks chased goals.

Tuncay Sanli: 6.0 – He had his chances with a number of headers but he couldn’t beat Petr Cech and his best chance he put wide of the post.

Mehmet Topal: 6.0 - Some reckless challenges and an early booking perhaps reduced his efficiency. He was sacrificed early in the second half as the Turks went in search of an equaliser.

Mehmet Aurelio: 7.0 – A strong performance from the midfielder whose passing was immaculate and who helped push his team forwards in the second half.

Arda Turan: 7.5 - Anonymous first half but far more involved in the second where he saw a lot of the ball and looked Turkey’s most creative player. A good shot gave him a deserved goal and, at 2-1, gave the Turks the hope they needed to go on and win the match.

Semih Senturk: 5.0 - Promoted to the starting line up after his equaliser against the Swiss but couldn’t get into the game at all and it was no surprise to see him subbed at half time.

Nihat Kahveci: 8.0 - Hadn’t had the best of games until the last five minutes. Was in the right place at the right time to profit from Cech’s mistake to equalise and then hit a simply sublime winner seconds later to win the game.

Substitutes:

Sabri Sarioglu: 7.0 - Given the second half to add some attacking impetus and made a nuisance of himself. Slid in a great cross from which Arda pounced to score the Turks’ first goal.

Kazim Kazim: 5.5 - Couldn’t quite deliver the quality the Turks needed in the final third but helped to keep the pressure on.

Emre Asik: 6.5 - Replaced injured Emre Gungor and had an eventful game. Received a kick in the head straight after coming on and followed it up with a yellow card.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Cech: 4.0 - An awful, awful mistake from a usually unflappable goalkeeper which gifted Turkey an equaliser with only minutes to go.

Grygera: 6.5 - Got forward well and supplied a good cross for the goal. However defensively he could have done better at times.

Ujfalusi: 5.0 – A poor end to the game saw Nihat have it far too easy as he scored the two goals that put the Turks through.

Rozehnal: 5.5 - Some well timed challenges and his partnership with Ujfalusi looked better than in recent games, up until the last five minutes. Went to sleep towards the end though which ultimately cost his side the game.

Jankulovski: 7.0 - As usual roared forward when he could and put in some good crosses. His accurate delivery from set pieces caused problems.

Sionko: 6.5 - Tried to link up and support Koller well. A great cross in for the second goal and some good moments.

Polak: 6.0 - Tried to push forwards but was guilty of giving the ball away on a number of occasions. Went close to making it 3-0 in the second half but his shot hit the post.

Matejovsky: 6.0 – The Reading man was having a decent game until injury forced him off after only 38 minutes.

Galasek: 6.5 - Protected his back four well and kept the Czechs looking solid at the back, although his influence waned as the Turks came on strong in the second half.

Plasil: 6.5 – Was often careless in possession and defensively suspect. However he slid in to score the Czechs’ second goal.

Koller: 7.0 - Replaced Baros in the starting line up and caused problems in the air for Servet and Gungor all evening. Good header to open the scoring.

Substitutes

Jarolim: 6.5 – Replaced the injured Matejovsky in the first half and put in a decent, if unspectacular performance.

We May All be Space Aliens: Study

Personal note: I don't understand scientists...why on earth this should be a concern for all of us, even if it's true; as I truely believe that the time, effort and research grant should be used for more meaningful purpose such as finding more efficient and abundant energy resource to replace oil, gas and coal, or finding cure for cancer or whatever is good for terrestrial purposes....

PARIS (AFP) - Genetic material from outer space found in a meteorite in Australia may well have played a key role in the origin of life on Earth, according to a study to be published Sunday.

European and US scientists have proved for the first time that two bits of genetic coding, called nucleobases, contained in the meteor fragment, are truly extraterrestrial.

Previous studies had suggested that the space rocks, which hit Earth some 40 years ago, might have been contaminated upon impact.

Both of the molecules identified, uracil and xanthine, "are present in our DNA and RNA," said lead author Zita Martins, a researcher at Imperial College London.

RNA, or ribonucleic acid, is another key part of the genetic coding that makes up our bodies.

These molecules would also have been essential to the still-mysterious alchemy that somehow gave rise, some four billion years ago, to life itself.

"We know that meteorites very similar to the Murchison meteorite, which is the one we analysed, were delivering the building blocks of life to Earth 3.8 to 4.5 billion years ago," Martins told AFP in an interview.

Competing theories suggest that nucleobases were synthesised closer to home, but Martins counters that the atmospheric conditions of early Earth would have rendered that process difficult or impossible.

A team of European and US scientists showed that the two types of molecules in the Australian meteorite contained a heavy form of carbon -- carbon 13 -- which could only have been formed in space.

"We believe early life may have adopted nucleobases from meteoric fragments for use in genetic coding, enabling them to pass on their successful features to subsequent generations," Martins said.

If so, this would have been the start of an evolutionary process leading over billions of years to all the flora and fauna -- including human beings -- in existence today.

The study, published in Earth Planetary Science Letters, also has implications for life on other planets.

"Because meteorities represent leftover materials from the formation of the solar system, the key components of life -- including nucleobases -- could be widespread in the cosmos," said co-author Mark Sephton, also at Imperial College London.

"As more and more of life's raw materials are discovered in objects from space, the possibility of life springing forth wherever the right chemistry is present becomes more likely," he said.

Uracil is an organic compound found in RNA, where it binds in a genetic base pair with another molecule, adenine.

Xanthine is not directly part of RNA or DNA, but participates in a series of chemical reactions inside the RNA of cells.

The two types of nucleobases and the ratio of light-to-heavy carbon molecules were identified through gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, technologies that were not available during earlier analyses of the now-famous meteorite.

Even so, said Martins, the process was extremely laborious and time-consuming, one reason it had not be carried out up to now by other scientists.

NYC Woman Gets 5 years for Branding Ex-Lover

A college student who branded a former lover's body with a scalding piece of metal as payback for never calling her after they had sex was sentenced to five years in prison Friday.

Kristina Caban, 23, had no comment as state Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus sentenced her for what he called a crime that was "not remotely justifiable."

Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg told Obus that Caban was the "mastermind behind the plan" to sear the torso of Samir "Sammy" Sara, then 23, for having sex with her once in 2004 and never calling her again.

Caban enlisted new boyfriend Robert Testagrossa to help brand a four-inch-high "R" on Sara's abdomen in October 2006, the prosecutor said. She said Caban lured the former lover to a hotel room, where Testagrossa and another man grabbed him.

Blumberg said the men used a Taser to immobilize Sara in a room at the Chelsea Inn while Caban laughed at his distress and kicked him while he was down.

The branding "iron" was actually a length of metal wire fashioned into a "R" — heated, and applied to Sara's torso, said Tracy Golden of the Manhattan district attorney's office. She said prosecutors did not know what the "R" stood for.

Caban and Testagrossa, 27, pleaded guilty to assault in August 2007 in exchange for five-year sentences. Testagrossa was sentenced in February and Caban, a photography student, was allowed to graduate from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan before going to prison.

Blumberg said the third assailant remains at large.

He said Sara will have a permanent, tragic memento of his encounter with Caban.

Caban's lawyer, James Friedman said, "She's a good kid, despite the picture painted of her, who exercised poor judgment and got herself into a bad situation. She is not the monster the prosecution made her out to be."

Caban's father, Rafael Caban, 55, is a retired Correction Department captain.

Testagrossa is the son of two prosecutors. His father Charles is the executive assistant district attorney in Queens who prosecuted the Sean Bell police shooting case. His mother is a lawyer in the Nassau County district attorney's office.

Woman Freed after being Locked Up for 18 Years

Saturday, June 14, 2008

ROME (FOX News) — An Italian woman whose family kept her locked in a room for almost two decades after she was accused of becoming pregnant out of wedlock has been freed by police, authorities and media reports said.

Police said they found the 47-year-old woman Friday in a filthy room in the family's home near Naples.

The woman was being hospitalized Saturday in the psychiatric ward of a Naples hospital, the ANSA news agency reported.

Authorities arrested the woman's brother, a farmhand, and sister, who worked in a nursery school, and put her 80-year-old mother under house arrest. The three were being investigated on suspicion of mistreatment and kidnapping.

The Carabinieri paramilitary police said in a statement that the woman had been locked up in the room since 1990 because of an unwanted pregnancy and that she was kept in "indescribable" conditions.

Italian TV showed the room with a bed with soiled sheets and a dirty toilet and sink, as well as plastic bottles of water and tin bowls.

Police said the woman's son, now 17, was living with relatives in town and didn't know about his mother.

An anonymous tip led police to the house along a country road on the outskirts of the rural town of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, police said. The La Stampa daily said the tip came from a neighbor who complained of the stench rising from the room where the woman was held.

Police were trying to find the man with whom she had conceived the child in the hope that he could help clarify whether her psychiatric problems predated her forced segregation in the home or were caused by it, ANSA said.

The Corriere della Sera and La Stampa dailies compared the story with several recent cases of people held in captivity in neighboring Austria.

Josef Fritzl is accused of fathering seven children with a daughter he held captive underground for 24 years in the family's home west of Vienna and keeping three of the children in the cellar too.

In another Austrian case, Natascha Kampusch was abducted at age 10 and held in an underground cell for 8 1/2 years by her kidnapper. Within hours of her escape, her kidnapper committed suicide by leaping in front of a commuter train.

Judge Declares Mistrial Over Own Sex Case

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A federal judge under scrutiny for posting sexually explicit material on his own Web site declared a mistrial Friday in an obscenity trial over which he was presiding.

Judge Alex Kozinski said he would ask that the case be assigned to another judge.

Kozinski is chief judge of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals but was serving as a trial judge in a federal obscenity prosecution of a man who distributed videos showing bestiality and extreme fetishes.

“In light of the public controversy surrounding my involvement in this case, I have concluded that there is a manifest necessity to declare a mistrial,” Kozinski wrote in his order.

The postings on the judge’s Web site came to light earlier this week when opening statements were under way. The trial was suspended Wednesday after jurors had already watched some of the videos.

Kozinski on Thursday asked an ethics panel of the 9th Circuit to conduct an investigation of his own conduct and pledged to cooperate fully. He also asked Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to assign the inquiry to a panel of judges outside the 9th Circuit’s jurisdiction of nine western states.

In the obscenity case, the U.S. Department of Justice is prosecuting Ira Isaacs, 57, on four counts, including importation or transportation of obscene material for sale. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and forfeiture of assets if convicted.

Defense attorney Roger Jon Diamond said he was very upset about the mistrial and was considering his options.

He said it was unclear whether the case could proceed with the same jury and a new judge.

Diamond accused the Department of Justice of “intimidating Judge Kozinski into doing this.” Justice Department attorneys are trying the case.

“We all have to be nervous and concerned when the executive branch can do this to anybody, including the sitting federal appeals judge,” Diamond said.

Department of Justice spokeswoman Laura Sweeney in Washington, D.C., declined to comment on any aspect of the case.

Diamond said there had been meetings with the prosecutor, Justice Department lawyer Kenneth Whitted, and with Brent D. Ward, the head of the government obscenity task force, since the controversy erupted.

“I made a proposal for a stipulated mistrial, providing the retrial would not take place until early next and that was flatly rejected by Mr. Whitted and Mr. Ward,” Diamond said. “They wanted to disqualify Kozinski and go ahead immediately with the same jury and a new judge Monday morning.”

Diamond said he was certain jurors knew of the controversy but he had favored allowing the trial to proceed with Kozinski presiding, rather than simply changing judges.

“If we were to come back to court with a new judge, it would send a message to the jury that Judge Kozinski did something wrong, which is not true. The jury would get the impression that something naughty had occurred, which is not the case.”

The images on Kozinski’s Web site were reported Wednesday by the Los Angeles Times.

Cyrus Sanai, a Beverly Hills lawyer who has had a long-running dispute with the 9th Circuit, told The Associated Press he discovered the sexual content while monitoring the judge’s Web site in December. Sanai said he downloaded the files and then started contacting reporters to bring attention to what he called widespread ethical problems on the 9th Circuit.

Barcelona Confirm Zambrotta To Milan

The deal has been public knowledge for weeks, but the two clubs have only just managed to complete the deal.

Zambrotta, has been a transfer target for the Rossoneri for almost a decade but they failed to capture him in the past. However, they have finally caught their man and this has been confirmed by both clubs.

"Barcelona and Milan have signed the agreement this morning for the passage of Zambrotta to the Rossoneri on a permanent basis," a statement confirmed.

"Zambrotta will sign a contract with Milan until 2012. The cost of the transfer is €9m, plus the possibility of an additional £1.6m depending on the Diavolo’s League position next season."

Zambro's wages are believed to be in the region of around £2.5m per season.

Milan are still in the process of strengthening. They seem well equipped at the back with Zambrotta's arrival and they are currently looking to strengthen up front. Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o is still a target as is Emanuel Adebayor and Didier Drogba.

Man pleads no contest in case of woman stuck to toilet

The Associated Press

NESS CITY, Kan. A western Kansas man pleaded no contest Friday to mistreating his girlfriend, who became stuck to a toilet after refusing to leave the bathroom for two years.

Ness County District Court clerk Joby Henning says Kory McFarren also pleaded no contest to an unrelated charge of lewd and lascivious behavior.

No sentencing date was immediately set.

The mistreatment charge was filed after police discovered McFarren's girlfriend, Pam Babcock, physically stuck to the toilet in February.

McFarren told police Babcock had refused to come out of the bathroom for two years. Police believe she spent at least a month sitting on the toilet.

The other charge came from an incident in March in which he allegedly exposed himself to a neighbor who was a minor.

R. Kelly Found Not Guilty in Child-Porn Case

CHICAGO (AP): R. Kelly was acquitted of all charges Friday after less than a day of deliberations in his child pornography trial, ending a six-year ordeal for the R&B superstar.

Kelly dabbed his face with a handkerchief and hugged each of his four attorneys after the verdict — not guilty on all 14 counts — was read. The Grammy award-winning singer had faced 15 years in prison if convicted.

Minutes later, surrounded by bodyguards, he left the courthouse without comment. Dozens of fans screamed and cheered as he climbed into a waiting SUV.

“All I heard (from Kelly) while those 14 verdicts were being read was ‘Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus,”’ said Sam Adam Jr., one of his attorneys.

Prosecutors had argued that a video tape mailed to the Chicago Sun-Times in 2002 showed Kelly engaged in graphic sex acts with a girl as young as 13 at the time. Both Kelly, 41, and the now 23-year-old alleged victim had denied they were the ones on the tape. Neither testified during the trial.

“Robert said all along that he believed in our system and he believed in God — and that when all the facts came out in court, he would be cleared of these terrible charges,” according to a statement from his publicist, Allen Mayer. “But he never dreamed it would take six and a half years. This has been a terrible ordeal for him and his family and at this point all he wants to do is move forward and put it behind him.”

Was Kelly on the tape?

The prosecution’s star witness was a woman who said she engaged in three-way sex with Kelly and the alleged victim. Defense attorneys argued the man on the tape didn’t have a large mole on his back; Kelly has such a mole.

The monthlong trial centered on whether Kelly was the man who appears on a sexually graphic, 27-minute videotape at the heart of the case, and whether a female who also appears on it was underage.

Over seven days presenting their case, prosecutors called 22 witnesses, including several childhood friends of the alleged victim and four of her relatives who identified her as the female on the video.

In just two days, Kelly’s lawyers called 12 witnesses. They included three relatives of the alleged victim who testified they did not recognize her as the female on the tape.

Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Shauna Boliker said she believed the female on the tape was a victim, not a prostitute as the defense had contended.

“This shows the world how difficult this crime is to prosecute,” she said. “It also takes the soul of the victim, the heart of the victim.”

Kelly won a Grammy in 1997 for “I Believe I Can Fly,” and is known for such raunchy hits as “Bump N’ Grind,” “Ignition,” and for “Trapped in the Closet,” a multipart saga about the sexual secrets of an ever-expanding cast of characters.

Of the 12 jurors, nine were men and three were women; eight were white and four were black. They included the wife of a Baptist preacher from Kelly’s Chicago-area hometown, Olympia Fields, as well as a compliance officer for a Chicago investment firm and a man in his 60s who emigrated from then-Communist Romania nearly 40 years ago.

Kelly still has a huge following

Despite his legal troubles, Kelly — who rose from poverty on Chicago’s South Side to become a star singer, songwriter and producer — still retains a huge following, and his popularity has arguably grown in recent years.

The singer has released more than half a dozen albums, most of them selling over a million copies. He’s also had a multitude of hits and gone on tours. Kelly has a new song, “Hair Braider,” out now, and is due to release a new album in July.

Kelly, always meticulously dressed in a suit and tie, appeared tense at times during the trial, furrowing his brow. He seemed particularly ill at ease when prosecutors played the sex tape in open court after opening arguments.

In the video, entered into evidence as “People’s Exhibit No. 1,” a man has sex with a young female, who is naked for most of the recording. She is often blank-faced. The man speaks to her in a hushed voice, and she calls him “Daddy.”

In one scene, alluded to in one count of the indictment, the man urinates on the female.

The issue of whether there was or wasn’t a fingernail-sized mole on the man’s lower was a subject of hours of testimony. A defense witness told jurors there was no mole on his back, proving it’s not Kelly, who has such a mole. But a prosecution witness displayed freeze frames of the video where a dark spot seemed to appear as the man turns to take off his pants.

One surreal moment came when a defense expert played a segment of the tape he doctored showing two headless bodies engaging in sex. The defense said that backed their argument that Kelly’s likeness could have been computer-generated.

Cross examination was often heated. Several witnesses cried on the stand.

The star prosecution witness, Lisa Van Allen, became teary eyed as she told jurors she engaged in several three-way sexual encounters with Kelly and the alleged victim, including once on a basketball court. Kelly videotaped the trysts, she said.

Van Allen also claimed Kelly used to carry a duffel bag stuffed full of his homemade sex tapes.

The defense called several witnesses in a bid to discredit Van Allen, accusing her of trying to extort money from Kelly. Under cross-examination, Van Allen admitted she once stole Kelly’s $20,000 diamond-studded watch from a hotel.

I Made A Mistake With Toni's Goal - Ref

Referee Tom Henning Ovrebo has admitted he “made a mistake” in disallowing Luca Toni’s goal against Romania despite UEFA claiming he was right to rule the goal offside.

The Italy striker scored a perfectly legitimate goal on the stroke of half-time when the scoreline was still blank, but it was ruled out despite Paul Codrea keeping the Bayern Munich man onside.

Italy felt aggrieved and they were furious with the decision which may end up costing the Azzurri their futures in the tournament.

The ref has now put his hands up and he admits the goal should have stood.

"There is nothing to discuss. I made a mistake on Toni’s goal and I said the same to the UEFA Commission," said the ref.

FIGC President Giancarlo Abete had asked for a public apology from UEFA but so far the football authority has refused.

UEFA have stood by the decision to chalk off the goal and they reportedly explained that the referee was right to disallow it.

This is now looking like a farcical situation as on one hand the referee is saying it was wrong to disallow it and on the other, the governing body on European football is insisting that it was right.

UEFA have plenty of explaining to do as the referee's comments are likely to cause even further controversy.

Egypt Bans 92-year-old's from Marrying Teenage Bride

CAIRO (BBC News): The Egyptian authorities have banned a 92-year-old man from marrying a 17-year-old girl, the Egyptian al-Akhbar newspaper has reported.

The ministry of justice invoked a law which says the age gap between spouses should not exceed 25 years.

Egypt brought in the law prohibiting the marriage of elderly men to very young girls during the Gulf oil boom.

It was an effort to prevent wealthy men from the Gulf states seeking young poor brides from the Egyptian countryside.

Not much is known about the 92-year-old man who tried to marry an Egyptian girl of 17 except that he is an Arab from the Gulf.

An Egyptian justice official said by refusing to endorse their marriage it would now be impossible for the girl to travel abroad with her husband.

However, in special cases, the justice ministry does allow foreign men to marry Egyptian women more than 25 years their junior if they deposit a very large sum of money in the name of their wife at the Egyptian National Bank.

Both husband and wife also have to report in person to the ministry which checks their marriage is genuine to prevent any kind of trafficking in women.

According to the al-Akhbar newspaper, 173 such marriages were allowed in the past year after the foreign husband deposited a sum equivalent to about US $8,000 and was screened.

Ronaldo Accused of Concluding Real Deal Months Ago

Jamie Jackson
The Observer, Sunday June 15 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo's personal terms for a move to Real Madrid were agreed 'a long time ago', according to a senior Manchester United source. Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes is now understood to have finalised all the key details with executives from the Spanish club.

'They have been talking for at least two months,' the source told Observer Sport last night, 'and it was all agreed with Real Madrid weeks ago. All this chat from [Real president] Ramón Calderón that he does not want to upset Manchester United, and Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be bought because he belongs to another club, is absolute rubbish. Discussions have gone way beyond the point of no return. Sir Alex Ferguson knows this now so you can imagine how it has gone down.'

This explains United's decision to lodge a formal complaint with Fifa, claiming that Ronaldo has been tapped up; a threat that, although announced occasionally by clubs, is rarely acted upon. Last week a national newspaper also published a photograph of Ronaldo meeting a Real official in January in Rome, the club's fitness instructor, Walter Di Salvo, who left Old Trafford for the Bernabéu.

'The people around Ronaldo and Real Madrid have been talking seriously for a long time - about everything including the details of his contract if he moves,' added the source.

Ronaldo signed an improved contract that runs until 2012 in April of last year and Ferguson has taken the stance, in public at least, that the player will not be allowed to leave. But the source outlined that United believe Madrid's strategy to have been based on winning Ferguson round once it became clear that Ronaldo wanted to go. 'Madrid knew it would be tough, but thought for the right price the manager would sell. But he doesn't want to. No way.'

But would not a sizeable offer make the deal inevitable? 'No, I don't think he would sell even for £100 million,' the source claimed, although there is no definite confidence at United about what will happen. Ferguson has said that the Glazer family, which owns United, would not sell Ronaldo for any price. But whether they would turn down an astronomical fee, especially given the club's £600m debt, is unclear. One option that may be explored is for Ferguson to persuade Ronaldo to stay at least one more season, then allow him to leave.

Barca Chief In London For Hleb

Barcelona vice president Marc Ingla has flown to London to negotiate with Arsenal over Alexander Hleb according to Sport.

The Blaugrana are favourites to land the Belarus midfielder and Pep Guardiola is believed to be a big fan of him.

Hleb made it clear at the end of the season that he would be leaving North London in search of a better deal elsewhere and it seems as if the Camp Nou side will offer him just what he wants.

The Catalonian giants are ready to offer €15m to lure the player away from the Emirates and into the Camp Nou and they will ty and lean on Arsenal and use Hleb’s own desire to leave as an excuse to make the Gunner’s part company with him more easily.

It is likely that Arsenal will play hardball over Hleb and they will do all they can to try and squeeze more money out of the Blaugrana.

It is looking increasingly likely tha Hleb will waer the Azulgrana jersey next term given his penchant to leave North London.

Inter Target Xavi

Reports from Spain claim that Inter Milan are interested in bringing Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez to the Giuseppe Meazza...

The Nerazzurri coach, José Mourinho, looks set to rebuild the squad in the close-season as he wants Inter Milan to mount a serious Champions League challenge after years without success in European competitions.

The signing of a creative midfielder seems to be one of Mourinho's priorities, and with the Special One missing out on the opportunity to capture Deco and Frank Lampard, he has turned his attention to Xavi.

The 28-year-old is a product of Barca's youth system, having joined the Catalan club at the age of 11.

Spanish paper Sport says that Mourinho approached Xavi's representative to learn his situation and what was necessary to lure him away from Camp Nou. The answer was reportedly negative, but the former Porto boss is still desperate to sign the player, whose value is estimated at €40 million.

Mourinho's interest in Xavi is far from new, as the Portuguese tactician had already tried to sign him when he was at Stamford Bridge. The Spanish midfielder declined the offer, saying that his dream was to hang up his boots at Barca.

Xavi's representative, Iván Corretja, stressed that his client is currently happy with life in Catalunya and that he has no intention to leave the Blaugrana.

"We are lucky that Xavi is a highly-valued player around the world because his performances for Barcelona have always been very regular," Corretja said.

"Even if offers arrive, that does not mean that we have to hear them because his intention is to fulfil his contract with Barça."

Drogba + Cash = Ronaldinho + Deco?

Chelsea have offered Didier Drogba to Barcelona as a part of the deal to bring Ronaldinho and Deco to Stamford Bridge.

The two Barcelona stars are on Luiz Felipe Scolari's agenda, and Chelsea representatives travelled to Catalunya this morning in order to discuss the move.

Big Phil supposedly has a 120 million euro budget at his disposal, so paying for the duo should not be a problem. But with Didier Drogba set to leave, the Blues are trying to include him to keep some of their cash for other deals.

In particular, Chelsea are also interested in signing Samuel Eto'o or David Villa. Eto'o will be discussed today, but the purpose of this meeting is to reach an agreement over the two Brazil born players, who have been made available by Barcelona.

Chelsea have an offer of 30 million euros in addition to Didier Drogba, though Barcelona are expected to demand 50-55 million in a straight cash deal. They paid 40 for Ronaldinho in 2003, and 14 for Deco a year later (along with Ricardo Quaresma, rated at 7m).

Even if Barcelona are open to Didier Drogba, the African himself may pose a problem as he angles for a move to Milan or Inter.

"I have a contract with Chelsea until 2010, so I am still a Chelsea player," he told Sky Sports earlier today. "Mourinho is my friend and I am happy for him because he was missing coaching. He is a top coach but, like I said, my contract runs until 2010."

As such, the Blues have travelled well aware that they will need to put the money on the table if they want to wrap this up, particularly with Manchester City interested in Ronaldinho and Inter in Deco.

Defending Champion Greece Out As Russia Take Spoils

Russia 1-0 Greece

The champions are deposed. After watching Spain defeat Sweden in Group D’s other fixture, both Greece and Russia knew that a win would keep them in the championships. A defeat would have meant being the second side eliminated from the tournament. It was to be Greece who suffered that ignominy. A solitary Konstantin Zyryanov strike in the first half was enough to sink the Greek challenge.

The European championships has a recurring habit of embarrassing its holders. Three times in the last four tournaments, the champions have been eliminated at the first hurdle.

After Denmark and Germany, out in the group stages at Euro 96 and Euro 2000 respectively, Greece’s name is added to the list in 2008.

A single Konstantin Zyryanov goal, stemming from a fatal error of judgement from Antonis Nikopolidis in goal was enough to ensure that Russia became the side to eliminate Otto Rehhagel’s obstinate side.

This year’s edition of the most frustrating team in football is a pale shadow of its stoic 2004 predecessor, and paid the price for a lack of invention and a frailty in defence.

Nikopolidis’ error preceded a second half where the Greeks could barely muster a significant opportunity. Angelos Basinas fired narrowly over just past the hour and Angelos Charisteas had a goal disallowed as the game approached injury time. The margins were minimal after Fanis Gekas raced clear of the Alexander Anyukov and shot against the legs of Igor Akinfeev. However, Roberto Rosetti elected to rule the passage offside.

Greece could not conjure another chance as Russia continued to make the better running. Dimiyar Bilayletdinov and Roman Pavluchenko both went close for Guus Hiddink’s side, but ultimately, one goal was sufficient to see the Greeks deposed from the championship throne.

First Half:

Otto Rehhagel responded to his side’s blunt display against Sweden with a more positive formation for this encounter. Out went Paraskevas Antzas from central defence, leaving more space for Angelos Basinas to roam in midfield. Surpirisingly, Giorgos Karagounis was shunted to the bench, but did make a belated first half appearance as a replacement for the injured Yourkas Seitaridis.

Guus Hiddink himself shuffled the Russian deck in the wake of his side’s Spanish drubbing; Dmitri Torbinksi entered the fray as the Russians adopted a more positive set-up. Hiddink was rewarded with a solid opening 45 minutes, in which Russia edged in front.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov made a strong impression from the outset, his industry in midfield forced the Greeks into discomfort. He picked the pocket of Basinas in the 14th minute to set Roman Pavluchenko clear in the box. The Spartak Moscow front-man curled a right footed effort just over, aided by a Antonis Nikopolidis touch. Yuri Zhirkov went close from the resulting corner; his powerful volley whistled just past the Greek upright.

Pavluchenko was benefiting from the scheming and craft of his midfielders, who worked tirelessly to prevent the Greeks from settling the encounter to their own pace. He was to go close moments later but his blocked effort was ruled offside.

Much like their Swedish performance, Greece’s best chance of a goal looked like it would stem from a set-piece. With no Karagounis from the start, Angelos Basinas was in charge from free-kicks, and from one of his deliveries, Angelos Charisteas should have edged his side in front.

Basinas swung a deep cross from the left, but Charisteas mistimed his jump and saw the ball merely glance off his forehead when the goal beckoned. Igor Semshov was ultimately on hand to clear.

Charisteas and Greece were made to rue that missed chance as Russia took the initiative, and the lead. 33 minutes had elapsed when Dmitri Torbinski over-cooked a cross from the left. His pass had Nikopolidis scampering and leaving the confines of his goal. Sergei Semak hooked the ball over his shoulder before it crossed the dead ball line and Konstantin Zyryanov tapped into an empty net. Nikopolidis, with all his experience, will be disappointed with his bewildering part in the opener.

Pavluckenko had a great chance to double his side’s lead seconds later but his headed chance was ruled offside as the ball bounced over the bar.

Second Half:

With only 45 minutes to save their defence of the Henri Delaunay trophy, the Greeks emerged more purposeful after the interval. For all their directness in their endeavours, the holders could not find a finishing touch; Charisteas lobbed limply at Akinfeev after three minutes of second half play.

Russia responded with a chance of their own, through the increasingly impressive Pavluchenko. The striker gained possession wide on the left and after nut-megging Sotiris Krgyiakos fired a drive narrowly wide.

There was an increased urgency in the game; both sides adopted a ‘cup final’ attitude as blows were swapped at each end. Greece went close again two minutes later, Nikos Liberopoulos teed up Angelos Basinas who fired too high while overbalanced.

The capable Russians looked comfortable while breaking into the Greek rear guard. Full backs Alexander Anyukov and Yuri Zhirkov supported and overlapped with rampant energy ensuring that Greece were continually pegged back.

Pavluchenko’s clever back-heel found Diniya Bilyaletdinov on the edge of the box on the hour, but the Lokomotiv Moscow’s striker left-foot shot dragged narrowly wide. Shambolic Greek defending almost handed Russia a second shortly after; Costas Katsouranis failed to deal with an Anyukov cross but Bilyaletdinov was unable to take full advantage with his goal-bound effort.

Pavluchenko went close again just after, but his profligacy was once again evident. After some brilliant work by Ivan Saenko in midfield, who released Pavluchenko with an eye-of-the-needle pass, the striker was unable to find a finish.

As the game ebbed towards its conclusion, the Greeks looked increasingly desperate. Upfield went their two centre backs in an attempt to save their tournament skins. To no avail however, as Theofanis Gekas released Charisteas, who was contentiously flagged offside long before his shot reached the goal.

Russia will do battle with Sweden in the final Group D fixture on Thursday for the second qualifying berth. With confidence bound to be high in the Russian camp, Guus Hiddink’s side will surely fancy their chances against a deflated Swedish outfit.

Villa Injury-Time Goal Sinks Swedes

Spain 2-1 Sweden

A stuttering display from Spain almost saw them held by a battling Sweden side, but a last-gasp goal from David Villa gave La Furia Roja all three points and all but sealed their passage to the next round...

David Villa was again Spain's hero as his injury-time goal earned Luis Aragones' men a last-gasp win over Sweden in the battle between the top two teams in Group D in Innsbruck.

Fernando Torres put this week's controversies behind him as he fired Spain ahead in the 15th minute but Zlatan Ibrahimovic levelled things up in the 34th minute with a goal that looked to have earned Sweden a share of the points.

That was until Villa, who scored a hat-trick in Spain's 4-1 win over Russia on Tuesday, struck right at the death to put his side on the brink of the quarter-finals.

The in-form Spanish, now undefeated in 18 games, quickly settled into their passing game and were soon probing the Sweden defence for frailties.

However, apart from an Andres Iniesta shot that went high and wide and a moment of danger when David Silva got in behind the Sweden defence before being closed down, Lars Lagerback's side were able to deal with the early Spanish threat.

Sweden's success lasted just 15 minutes though before they found themselves a goal down thanks to a well-worked Spain corner.

Xavi played a low ball in towards the front post for Villa, who in turn found Valencia club-mate Silva on the edge of the box and his cross back in towards the six-yard box was stabbed home by the stretching Torres.

That was only the second goal Torres has scored for his country since 2006 and was the perfect response after a week of speculation suggesting he had had a rift with coach Aragones following his early second-half substitution against Russia.

It had been largely all Spain up until that point, but Sweden proved there were two teams in the contest as they almost fashioned an immediate equaliser to Torres' goal.

Veteran forward Henrik Larsson cleverly slipped Johan Elmander through on the right of the area, but the Toulouse forward smashed his shot into the side-netting with only Iker Casillas to beat.

Larsson had a chance of his own in the 22nd minute after being fed by strike-partner Ibrahimovic, but the 36-year-old's attempted lob over Casillas sailed over the crossbar.

Ibrahimovic, widely regarded as Sweden`s chief threat, had been well-marshalled by the Spain backline but the Inter Milan striker showed his class as he drew his side level 11 minutes before half-time.

The giant striker raced onto a deep cross from Fredrik Stoor, brought the ball under control and, just as it appeared as though the chance might be lost, he held off the challenge of Sergio Ramos before sliding a low shot past Casillas.

That was Ibrahimovic's second goal of the tournament following his superb effort against Greece and saw him move to within one of Spain striker Villa.

Like Ibrahimovic, Villa had also been fairly quiet, but the hat-trick hero against Russia brought a save out of Andreas Isaksson in the 37th minute with a 20-yard volley.

Sweden suffered a setback at half-time when Ibrahimovic, who had been an injury doubt leading up to the game due to a knee problem, failed to re-appear for the second half, with Markus Rosenberg taking his place.

Rosenberg had little opportunity to impress in the first 15 minutes of the second half though as the two teams cancelled each other out, and in a bid to shake things up Spain boss Aragones opted to make a double change on the hour-mark with Cesc Fabregas and Santi Cazorla sent into action.

Soon after their introduction Spain had a great chance to take the lead as the Sweden goal survived three near misses in quick succession.

First Silva's shot was parried by Isaksson, who then did well to bravely block the follow-up from Villa. The ball was still alive though and, with Isaksson out of position, Torres looked set to slot into an empty net only to see his effort deflected for a corner.

Spain were starting to get the upper hand and Isaksson was again called into action in the 67th minute, diving full length to turn away Marcos Senna's 25-yard drive.

Sweden enjoyed a rare chance in 78th minute when a deep Anders Svensson free-kick cleared the Spain defence and found Petter Hansson at the far post, but the centre-back put his volley across the face of goal.

Spain piled forward in the closing stages in search of the winning goal, but when Isaksson saved Torres' low shot in the 89th minute it looked as though the Swedes would be taking a hard-earned point.

However, Villa had other ideas and he raced onto a Joan Capdevila long ball forward, skipped inside Hansson before coolly slotting home past Isaksson for the winner.

Player Ratings: Spain 2-1 Sweden

SPAIN

Casillas 5.5: Could have done better with Ibra's goal, but was let down badly by his defence, admittedly. Not the commanding presence that he is for Real Madrid.

Sergio Ramos 7: Another bustling showing from the youngster, who arguably looks better going forward than he does hanging back. Enigmatic.

Carles Puyol 7: Solid before his early withdrawal. Spain were the poorer for losing him.

Marchena 6.5: An improved performance from the Valencia man, who won back a bit of respect from the fans.

Capdevila 7: A delightful ball in for the winning goal, meaning that his input overall was invaluable. However, he might have kept a tighter leash on Elmander.

Iniesta 6.5: Not quite up to his usual standard, but held possession well enough. A bad day at the office.

Marcos Senna 7: Had little to do defensively but got forward to decent effect. Generally in the right place at the right time.

Xavi 7: Not a classic showing by any means, but he did enough to fully merit his place in the team again.

Silva 6.5: A fantastic chip forward for Torres' opening goal suggested that he was going to be less wasteful than the last game, but he faded as the match wore on.

Torres 7: Hard work and a great finish - what more can you ask for? Well, beating defenders more frequently would be a start. Still, El Niño once again earned his spot and Aragonés will surely think that he can handle the pace of the quarter-finals.

Villa 7.5: Energetic, skilful, and above all confident in the finish. No hat-trick this time, but that solitary goal arguably mattered even more.

Substitutes

Albiol 5: One step behind his quarry for virtually his entire time on the pitch. Not up to scratch. Juanito must be feeling that he should inherit the third choice slot.

Cazorla 6: Saw little of the ball and didn't get forward as much as he might have hoped.

Cesc 6: See Cazorla, although Cesc did see a bit more action. Still, he didn't manage to impress too much.

SWEDEN

Isaksson 6.5: His double-save midway through the second half could have seen his side through to a draw, but it wasn't to be. A good showing overall.

Stoor 7: Effective both at the front and the back, and his cross for Sweden's goal can't be argued with.

Mellberg 7: Played very well for 85 minutes and must be considered the reference point of the Swedish back line.

Hansson 6.5: So impressive until the very end when he let Villa past him - not that he's the first defender to be guilty of that particular crime.

Nilsson 5.5: With Spain flooding down the right early on he had his work cut out, and in the end the game largely passed him by in the attacking sense.

Elmander 6: Plenty of energy and got past his marker a lot, but one of his misses in particular is unforgivable.

Andersson 7: Narrowed angles and harried well - an experienced performance.

Svensson 6.5: Confident enough in the defence but considering that Sweden played centrally for most of the first half he only seldom found the decent forward ball.

Ljungberg 6.5: Not exactly world-class, but covered the pitch well and showed his experience.

Larsson 7.5: The legs aren't quite what they used to be, but just watch some of his touches. Masterful supporting the forward, although he could have maybe tracked back more.

Ibrahimovic 7: There's no arguing with the fact that he held off his man and scored, and although he wasn't quite as his best, he didn't need to be. Substituted at half-time.

Substitutes

Rosenberg 6: Came on at half time for Ibra but didn't quite live up to that tough billing.

Sebastian Larsson N/A: No time to impress.

Kallstrom N/A: Had less than ten minutes in which to impress.

Pussy and Bitch

A kid comes home from school and says to his mom, “Mom I’ve got a problem.” She says “Tell me.” He tells her that the boys at school are using 2 words he doesn’t understand.

She asks him what they are. He says “well, pussy and bitch”.

She says “Oh That’s no big deal, pussy is a cat like our little Mittens, and bitch is a female dog like our Sandy.”

He thanks her and goes to visit dad in the workshop in the basement. He says to his dad, “Dad the boys at school are using words I don’t know, and I asked mom and I don’t think she told me the exact meaning.

Dad says “Son, I told you never to go to mom with these matters, she cant handle them. What are the words?” He tells him…pussy and bitch.

Dad says “OK” and pulls a Playboy down from the shelf, takes a marker and circles the pubic area of the centerfold and says, “son, everything inside this circle, is pussy.”
“OK dad, so what’s a bitch?” “Son” he says, “everything outside that circle.”

The Miracle of Toilet Paper

Fresh from my shower, I stand in front of the mirror complaining to my husband that my breasts are too small. Instead of characteristically telling me it's not so, he uncharacteristically comes up with a suggestion.

If you want your breasts to grow, then every day take a piece of toilet paper and rub it between them for a few seconds.'

Willing to try anything, I fetched a piece of toilet paper and stood in front of the mirror, rubbing it between my breasts.

How long will this take?' I asked.

They will grow larger over a period of years,' my husband replies.

I stopped 'Do you really think rubbing a piece of toilet paper between my breasts every day will make my breasts larger over the years?'

Without missing a beat he says 'Worked for your butt, didn't it?'

He's still alive, and with a great deal of therapy, he may even walk again, although he will probably continue to take his meals through a straw.

PM Cuba Memperbodohkan Rakyat Dengan Cadangan Pelik

Kenapa pula beliau hendak mencabar lima buah negeri Pakatan Rakyat supaya menurunkan minyak terlebih dahulu," tegasnya.

Ooijer Admits To Hand-Ball

Holland defender Andre Ooijer has admitted that he handled a shot from France striker Thierry Henry in their Euro 2008 Group C clash last night.

The Blackburn Rovers defender has told Sportweek that the French should have been awarded a penalty in the incident, where Henry’s effort was blocked at close-range by his arm.

Had referee Herbert Fandel ruled against Ooijer, it would have given France the chance to bring the scores level at 1-1, in a match they eventually capitulated in to lose 4-1 to the impressive Dutch side.

"There should have been a penalty from Thierry Henry's shot,” he admitted.

"I stopped the ball with my hand. Without that there would have certainly been a goal."

Ooijer's comments support what beleaguered French coach Raymond Domenech said earlier on Saturday, where he claimed that the decision altered the course of the match.

"There was a turned down penalty appeal which could have changed the course of the match. The referee is the only one not to have seen it," said Domenech.

France need to beat world champions Italy in Tuesday's final match to have any hope of reaching the last eight of the event in Austria and Switzerland, also relying on the Dutch, who have already qualified as group winners, avoiding defeat against a strong Romania side.

Arsenal Officially Unveil Ramsey

Arsenal have officially confirmed the signing of Wales Under-21 international Aaron Ramsey, beating Manchester United and Everton to the player’s signature.

Ramsey’s decision to choose the Emirates Stadium as his next destination has been common knowledge for the last week, and now the young playmaker can officially be called an Arsenal player.

17-year-old Ramsey has signed a long-term contract and has been purchased for an undisclosed fee, believed to be just over £5 million.

Despite his young age, Ramsey has already represented his country at Under-21 level and was also recently called up to the full Welsh squad for their friendly international matches in Iceland and Holland, but was an unused substitute on both occasions.

Since making his debut for Cardiff City in the 2006/07 season, Ramsey went on to make a total of 22 appearances for the Welsh side, including a substitute appearance in May’s FA Cup Final against Portsmouth at Wembley Stadium.

Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger, who is under pressure to build a title winning side for next season, told the club’s official website that he was delighted with the addition of Ramsey.

“We’re delighted to have signed Aaron Ramsey. He is a young player who has shown huge potential with his performances for both Cardiff City and Wales at under-17 and Under-21 levels,” said Wenger.

“He is still only 17, but has already shown that he is a very intelligent and mature player with great quality. We are all looking forward to welcoming Aaron to the Club for our pre-season preparations.”

Ramsey himself admitted that Wenger had been a big factor in his decision to join The Gunners.

“I’m so happy to have signed for Arsenal. I am joining one of the biggest clubs in the world and can’t wait to meet my new team mates. I recently met with Arsène Wenger and he was a big factor in my decision to join Arsenal,” stated Ramsey.

“He talked to me for a long time about the club and the plans for the future, which really excites me. Arsenal is a club that always gives young players an opportunity at the highest level of the game and I am going to work my hardest to be part of future successes here.

“It was a really difficult decision to leave Cardiff City, they are my local club with great supporters and I would just like thank everyone at Cardiff City for their support and help in my early career. I will still look out for their results and there will always be a place in my heart for the Bluebirds.”

Ramsey will join up with his new team mates at Arsenal for pre-season training in early July.

Italy 1-1 Romania: Buffon Saves Italy's Campaign

Italy live to fight another day at the European Championships thanks to a late penalty save from goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon against Romania.

Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu had put the Romanians in front in the 57th minute only for Christian Panucci to equalise straight away for the world champions, who suffered a 3-0 humiliation to Holland in their opening Group C game.

Panucci then brought Daniel Niculae down five minutes from time to concede the penalty, but Mutu's effort from the spot was saved by Buffon.

The result means that Italy must now win their last game against France on Tuesday to stand any chance of progressing.

Italy did feel hard done by the officials, especially after Norwegian referee Tom Henning ruled out Luca Toni's goal on the stroke of half-time for offside.

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni made five changes to the starting line-up but it failed to inspire the Azzurri, who are still winless after two games.

Fabio Grosso, Giorgio Chiellini, Simone Perrotta, Daniele De Rossi and Alessandro Del Piero all started.

Among those omitted were World Cup winners Marco Materazzi and Gennaro Gattuso, who looked sluggish in Bern on Monday.

The Italians, severely criticised after their flat display against the Dutch, showed a sense of urgency from the start and almost broke the deadlock in the eighth minute.

In the 15th minute, Romania should have gone in front but Mutu's left-footed strike from the edge of the area was parried away by Buffon.

At the other end, Toni latched onto Grosso's cross but his header went high over the bar.

Buffon was then forced to fully stretch to clear Gabriel Tamas' free-kick towards the far post.

Italy almost fell behind in the 19th minute, with Cristian Chivu's free-kick deflected by Panucci but rebounding off the far post, with Buffon already beaten.

Romania were forced to make their first substitution midway through the first half with Dica replacing the injured Mirel Radoi.

Italy showed more determination and twice had the opportunity to take the lead but both Del Piero and Toni headed wide.

Disaster soon struck for Italy after the break. Gianluca Zambrotta's back header towards Buffon was intercepted by a determined Mutu, who fired past the goalkeeper.

It did not take long for Donadoni's men to hit back.

Chiellini latched onto Del Piero's corner and headed towards the far post where an unmarked Panucci fired into the back of the net.

The goal inspired the Italians, who surged forward more aggressively but failed to find the finishing touch.

In the 73rd minute, Grosso made a vital tackle on substitute Banel Nicolita as he threatened to break clear.

At the other end, Lobont made a spectacular save from De Rossi's flying header.

Italy continued to surge forward but their efforts to clinch their first win on Swiss soil proved no avail.

And they have Buffon to thank for keeping their Euro 2008 hopes alive, after he kept out Mutu's late penalty with an agile save which saw the ball rebound off hand and foot before heading out for a corner.

Player Ratings: Italy 1-1 Romania

ITALY

Buffon 9 – His penalty save was worth this rating alone, a stop that will go down as one of the great saves in European Championships history.

Zambrotta 5 – Shocking mistake for Mutu’s goal, and struggled at times to get the better of Rat.

Panucci 7.5 – Excellent at the back. Organised the defence, and scored Italy’s equaliser. Conceded the penalty, but it was a very poor decision by the referee, and that is being kind and diplomatic.

Chiellini 6.5 – Won everything in the air, and formed a decent partnership with Panucci. Created his partner’s goal with header towards the far post.

Grosso 8 – Outstanding again, particularly in the first half when he bombarded forward at will, and whipped in some great crosses.

De Rossi 6 – Slightly disappointing, but still much better than the players he replaced Ambrosini and Gattuso. Would have scored with a header if it wasn’t for a magnificent Lobont save.

Pirlo 6.5 – Kept Italy ticking in the middle of the park, but did not find any killer passes. His set-pieces were generally poor.

Perrotta 6.5 – Nothing eye-catching but he was crucial to Italy’s balance, which was the key to Italy’s fine first half. Donadoni blundered again by taking him off, thus completely unbalancing the side.

Camoranesi 7.5 – Italy’s best final-third player, he was involved in everything in the first half. Tired after the break.

Del Piero 5 – A massive disappointment. Missed an excellent early chance, and then never made an impact, leading to his eventual substitution.

Toni 7 – All that was missing from his performance was a goal, and in truth he did find the back of the net but was denied by a simply shocking decision from the linesman. Could have had a hat-trick today. Unlucky.

Substitutes

Cassano 7 – A bright spark after coming on, but Donadoni replaced him for the wrong player, meaning he was playing in an unbalanced team. Once again Donadoni got it all wrong.

Quagliarella 6 – Did not get enough touched to make an impact in the game.

Ambrosini N/A – Only played a few minutes at the end.

ROMANIA

Labont 9 – A series of stunning saves to deny the Italians. The stops from Toni and De Rossi headers were world class.

Contra 6.5 – Sound down the right flank, even if he was left exposed in the first half to Grosso’s forward thrusts.

Tamas 8 – Outstanding. A rock in defence. Also good in possession, and went close with a long range free kick.

Goian 7 – Continued his solid partnership with Tamas, as the pair impressed for the second game running.

Rat 6.5 – Did really well going forward, but was caused a few problems defensively by Camoranesi in the first half.

Petre 4.5 – Very poor. Torn apart by Grosso, and also missed a fine chance at 1-1 to put his side back ahead.

Chivu 7 – A class act once again in the middle of the park. Took control in the second half after Perrotta went off the field. Hit post with a deflected free kick.

Radoi 6 – Made a steady start to the game until he was substituted after just 20 minutes due to a facial injury.

Codrea 6 – Lots of quantity in midfield but not too much quality. Made one goal saving tackle on Perrotta.

Mutu 7.5 – A quiet first half, but outstanding after the break. Put Romania ahead, created a one-on-one chance for Petre, but unfortunately missed a penalty. However it wasn’t really a miss, it was a wonder-save from Buffon.

Niculae 6 – Busy and industrious throughout although he maybe should have been more involved.

Substitutes

Dica 6.5 - Replaced Radoi early on, and largely did well. Inventive, intricate and tricky in possession.

Nicolita 6 - Did much better than the player he replaced, and contributed to Romania's sound final third to the game.

Cocis N/A - Brought on to run down the clock.

Netherlands 4-1 France: Dutch Master Class

Rampant Holland produced an attacking masterclass for the second time in four days to bury France in Bern and seal their qualification for the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring and Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder added others after the break as Marco van Basten's in-form team sank the French in the same way they did world champions Italy here on Monday.

Les Bleus' consolation came through Thierry Henry on his return to the team, but even their revered defence could not handle the pace and brio of their opponents' attacks.

France meet Italy on Tuesday but they both may be eliminated if Romania, who are second in the group, defeat Holland on the same night.

The Dutch, meanwhile, will now have to cope with the tag of tournament favourites after disposing of the two World Cup finalists of 2006 in sensational style, scoring seven goals in the process.

They were bound to feel at home given the army of Oranje fans who had invaded Bern city centre during the day and then the Stade de Suisse Wankdorf in the evening.

Their confidence was also sky high after their stunning victory over the Italians, and Kuyt's opener after only eight minutes helped them settle.

It was a simple goal of the kind France rarely concede, Rafael van der Vaart sending a corner in from the right and Kuyt beating Florent Malouda in the air to head home at the near post.

France coach Raymond Domenech, who had reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation in bringing Patrice Evra, Sidney Govou and fit-again Henry back into the side, would have been alarmed at the defending for the goal.

Just as alarming for him would have been the confident swagger that had returned to the Dutch team, whose slick passing game was a joy to watch.

They were posing all sorts of problems early on, Sneijder firing just over in the 15th minute and then Kuyt poking a shot over the bar when free in the area after he pounced on a weak Lilian Thuram header.

France had been criticised back home for their laboured performance against Romania in Zurich but they upped the tempo here and created a host of half-chances in the final 20 minutes of the half.

Their first sight of goal came when Govou's near-post effort drew an excellent instinctive save out of Edwin van der Sar.

Three more opportunities fell to the French in the space of a few minutes - Malouda, Govou and Franck Ribery all bringing decent stops out of van der Sar with low drives.

Henry curled wide from 20 yards with the last opportunity of the half but at the start of the second period, he thought he had earned his side a penalty.

Govou's driven cross-shot was deflected into his path and the Barcelona striker's goalbound effort was blocked by the hand of Andre Ooijer.

Referee Herbert Fandel was obviously unsighted and only gave a corner, much to the chagrin of the French.

Henry had an immediate chance to exact his revenge but having been put clean through in the 53rd minute by Malouda's spectacular pass, the former Arsenal skipper sent his lob way over.

His profligacy was punished on the hour mark when two of Holland's second-half substitutes, Robben and van Persie, combined to put the Dutch further ahead.

The goal originated from some sublime skills by Ruud van Nistelrooy on the touchline and his Real Madrid team-mate Robben took the ball on.

His perfect cross from the left found van Persie, whose volley crept over the line despite the best efforts of France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet.

Henry finally got his goal in the 70th minute when he glanced home a cross from the right from Willy Sagnol but, within seconds, Robben restored Holland's two-goal cushion.

The left-winger ran onto Sneijder's through-ball down the left channel, won himself half a yard against Thuram and drove home a powerful drive from a narrow angle into the roof of the net.

The impressive van Nistelrooy almost got himself on the scoresheet with seven minutes left with an impudent header, but it was clawed out by Coupet.

It was left for Sneijder to add garnish, his superb curling shot from 25 yards giving Coupet no chance.

Player Ratings: Netherlands 4-1 France

Netherlands

Van der Sar: 7 - Made some solid stops, particularly midway through the first half, and looked dependable throughout.

Boulahrouz: 9 - Brilliant! Made several perfect challenges and gave Malouda no joy down the left hand side, or Evra, or even Ribery when he came over to that side as well. An incredible showing from the Chelsea man. Will Scolari be interested in hanging onto him now?

Ooijer: 8 - The player of the first half. Very quick to close down any French attacks and stayed tight to his man. His overcommitment occasionally almost left him exposed, but his was a performance tailor-made for the day.

Mathijsen: 5.5 - A little off the pace on the odd occasion and was caught out regularly when the French roved forward.

Van Bronckhorst: 7 - Had a stern test up against the vibrant Sidney Govou and often Franck Ribery doubling up as well, but he coped very well with a tenacious performance.

De Jong: 7 - Stuck in there to his credit, but could not impose himself on the game as he would have liked.

Engelaar: 5 - Surprisingly off-colour after a very good first game against Italy. Misplaced passes and was not as big a presence in stopping the dynamic Franck Ribery. Was substituted at half time.

Kuyt: 7.5 - Tenacious as ever playing down the right hand side. A well-taken header, in the right place at the right time from close range from a corner kick.

Van der Vaart: 7 - Smart passing as usual, not quite as expansive and marked tighter than he was against Italy.

Sneijder: 8.5 - Like Kuyt, worked tremendously hard down his flank, doubling up to assist van Bronckhorst on defensive duty brilliantly. Good pace when breaking forward and scored an absolute beauty in the dying seconds.

Van Nistelrooy: 8 - Moved very freely and held the ball up brilliantly for his side all over the pitch. Did not get into the box as much as he would have liked against a very disciplined French rearguard. Amazingly, he didn't score, but he showed several touches of pure class, including two 360-spins that would have made Cruyff himself proud.

Substitutes

Robben: 8.5 - A magnificent performance off the bench. His devastating pace put the French to the sword and his tight-angle blast gave the Dutch the initiative back after having just conceded.

Van Persie: 8 - Full of energy and was in the right place at the right time to thump home the second goal. An ambitious substitution that paid off.

Bouma: 6.5

France

Coupet: 5 - Made a couple of good stops and was powerless to stop the first and last goal. He would have done extremely well to stop the second, but ultimately should have been able to keep out the third from Robben, which went over his head at the near post.

Sagnol: 7 - Got up and down his flank to decent effect. Was better than against Romania, but did not win his duel with Sneijder in the Dutch half or his own. Provided a smart ball across goal for Henry to touch home.

Thuram: 3 - Had a nightmare and looked every one of his 36 years. Was not quick or sharp enough and was even out-muscled and caught out of position from time to time. With no Mexes to step in, it's likely he will nevertheless retain his place in the side against Italy..

Gallas: 6.5 - Was strong at the back and, unlike Thuram, had the athleticism to keep pace with the Dutch forwards. Could have done little to stop the goals that punished his side on the break.

Evra: 7 - Looked a great fit in the side. Not afforded as much offensive freedom as usual but his defensive discipline was a testament to his all-round ability as a full-back.

Govou: 7.5 - A great addition to the team down the right wing and worked tremendously hard for his side. Had a few half chances and the Dutch a number of problems.

Toulalan: 7 - Grew into the game and was solid defensively, also playing neat and tidy passes throughout. Became overrun towards the end of the game.

Makelele: 6 - Made some horrible challenges but otherwise played quite well, full of energy and not allowing the Dutch too much freedom. Did not give up until the end.

Ribery: 7 - Lively and full of running but too selfish at crucial moments. Has not yet provided the magic spark he did for Bayern this season.

Malouda: 5 - Barring a few moments where he showed the skill we all know him to have, Malouda had a poor game. He gave the ball away far too often and was not incisive enough with his running or passing.

Henry: 6.5 - Some good movement but ultimately was kept out of the game for far too long, which is hardly his own fault. Had a big miss with the score at 1-0, but did pull back a smart goal to make it 2-1, only for the Dutch to add another less than a minute later.

Umno Youth Launches Blog

KUALA LUMPUR (The Star): Umno Youth has launched a blog to gather feedback from the people.

The wing’s media relations secretariat chairman Datuk Sazmi Miah said the blog, named Media Saka Bangsa, would be open for a “no holds barred” input from the public until July 20.

All information and feedback will be gathered and a report presented to Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

“It will become a blog to explain what our general stand is on certain issues and at least give people some insight on what is really going on in Umno Youth.

“We also need to get more input from mainstream and alternative media, which represents the voice of the people,” he told the press after launching the web blog http://sakabangsa.blogspot.com on Tuesday.

Sazmi encouraged the public to post their views on the Youth Wing, or ask questions, via the blog.

“We are not out for a debate. If it’s a matter of perception or opinion, each person is entitled to his opinion,” he said.

“But if it has to do with facts and figures, then we will try to furnish answers to clarify the matter.”

He added that Umno Youth had to “do something” after Barisan Nasional’s dismal performance in the recent general election, where the party failed to gain a two-third majority.

“In four years, we went from our highest point (in 2004) to our lowest point (in 2008).

“If people say we are arrogant, then that is how they judge us. We want to move forward, we want to listen to the people and do something about it.”

After the launch, Sazmi asked the media – mainstream, alternative and bloggers – for their perception and opinion of Umno Youth.

Among others, the media highlighted Umno Youth’s accessibility to the media (especially to the alternative and Chinese/ Tamil media), the keris issue and Hishammuddin’s “insincere apology,” the wing’s deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin, and how Umno Youth seemed to lack the voice they had before.

Inspired Celtics storm back to push Lakers to brink of elimination

BOS (15-9) 14 26 31 26 97
LAL (13-6) 35 23 15 18 91

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- This was how the Boston Celtics of yesteryear -- Cous and Russell and Bird and Hondo and the Chief -- would do it. Digging deep, they fought for every loose ball, scrapping with grit and guts, champions clad in green.

These Celtics are no different.

And they are just one win from another NBA title.

"Yeah," Kevin Garnett said. "I can taste it."

In their comeback season, Boston saved its biggest one of all for the finals.

The Celtics rallied from a 24-point deficit and beat the Los Angeles Lakers 97-91 on Thursday night to take a commanding 3-1 lead in this history-rich series and move within one victory of a 17th championship that seemed impossible a year ago.

"I don't want to get overjoyed," Paul Pierce said. "I want to go out there to try and win Game 5 on Father's Day and then I'll be able to breathe. Right now, I'm waiting to exhale."

He's not alone.

A rivalry between the league's two most storied franchises -- with some of the game's biggest names and biggest moments -- now has a rally for the ages.

No team had ever overcome more than a 15-point deficit after the first quarter, and Elias Sports Bureau said it was the largest comeback in the finals since 1971. One thing's for sure, it will forever be remembered in the annals of Celtics-Lakers lore.

When the final horn sounded, Pierce, an L.A. kid playing in front of family and friends, doubled over in exhaustion and exuberance. The Celtics, the team he stuck with through 10 years, including a 24-win season in 2006-07, had done the impossible.

"It's definitely a great win, one that you're going to put up there in the library and break back out one day for your kids to watch," Pierce said. "But I want nothing more than that ring right now."

Pierce scored 20 points, Garnett had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Ray Allen had 19 points, two coming on a marvelous reverse layup in the fourth as Boston's Big Three, thrown together last summer by general manager Danny Ainge to revive a franchise accustomed to hanging banners from the rafters, put the Lakers on the brink of a summer vacation.

It took an epic comeback to do it, and now the Celtics can reclaim their place atop pro basketball with a win in Game 5 on Sunday night in Los Angeles.

No team has ever recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the finals.

Kobe Bryant scored 19 points on 6-of-19 shooting but the league's MVP couldn't rescue the Lakers when they needed him most. Lamar Odom had 19 points -- 15 in the first half -- and Pau Gasol, whose addition in a midseason trade was supposed to give the Lakers their final piece to complement Bryant, had 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Trailing by 18 points at halftime and seemingly done when they fell behind by 20 with 6:04 left in the third quarter, the Celtics outscored the Lakers 31-15 in the third quarter to pull within 73-71 going into the fourth.

The remarkable rally was reminiscent of what Los Angeles did in Game 2, when the Lakers trimmed a 24-point deficit to two in the fourth quarter before the Celtics regrouped to open a 2-0 lead. But Boston had another 12 minutes to finish off theirs, and the green-and-white did.

"Some turnaround in that game. The air went out of the building," said Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who was asked what he told his club afterward. "Well, it's not over. This is not over. The series is not over."

Boston's comeback included a 21-3 run over the final five minutes, fueled by two 3-pointers from Eddie House, who was getting more playing time because of Rajon Rondo's tender left ankle. The Celtics were still down by double digits with 2 minutes left in the third but closed the quarter with a 10-1 run, capped by P.J. Brown's dunk -- a slam that could be felt all the way back to Boston's North End.

The Celtics finally caught the Lakers at 73-all on Leon Powe's jumper in the lane with 9:05 remaining, tying the score for the first time since it was 2-2 in the first minute.

At that point, the Lakers looked lost, confused, you name it. And when House hit an 18-foot jumper with 4:07 remaining, the Celtics had their first lead, 84-83. Boston's bench erupted, Lakers fans gasped and it was just a matter of time before they were heading out of Staples Center wondering what went wrong.

Allen, one of the game's purest shooters, then drove to the basket and made a reverse layup as dramatic as the Celtics' comeback.

"It was huge," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "It was really supposed to be a middle pick-and-roll with Kevin and Ray, and Ray waved Kevin off because he liked the matchup that he had already, so he didn't want to bring another defender in to help. It was a great call by Ray. The layup was just tremendous."

Bryant, who except for a 36-point performance in Game 3 has been an ordinary superstar in his try for a fourth championship ring, didn't score in the first half. He tried to rally the Lakers and got them within 89-87 with one of his patented twisting layups. But James Posey drilled a 3-pointer for Boston to make it 92-87 with 1:13 left. Derek Fisher's long jumper got the Lakers within three.

But Pierce was fouled and made two free throws, forcing Jackson to call a timeout with 47 seconds to go. As the Lakers headed toward their bench, Pierce pumped his fists, flexed his muscles and let out a yell.

At the other end of the court, Bryant hung his head.

"They were determined not to let me beat them tonight," he said. "I saw three, four bodies every time I touched the ball."

Surrounded by Hollywood stars on their own back lot sound stage, the Lakers were seeking their 10th straight win at home in the postseason and were about to drop the "if necessary" tag from Game 6. Now, they have to hope they can force the series back to Boston.

For the third time in this series, commissioner David Stern met with the media before the game. It was an unusual step for the league's long-tenured leader, who went on the offensive to defend the integrity of NBA officials under fire in the Tim Donaghy scandal.

Maybe the next investigation should focus on what happened to the Celtics in the first quarter.

L.A's crowd, notorious for arriving late, leaving early and spending more time text messaging and talking on cell phones than clapping, was much more involved than in Game 3. They roared when Lakers Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar presented the game ball to officials and were on their feet when Los Angeles blasted to a 16-6 lead.

By then, Odom had scored eight points, doubling his total from Game 3 and the enigmatic forward finished the first quarter having made all six field goal attempts and scoring 13 points. Moments later, Garnett went out with his second personal, and with the NBA's best defender on the bench, the Lakers ran wild.

Odom made consecutive jumpers from the top of the key to put Los Angeles ahead 26-7. The Lakers eventually pushed their lead to 45-21 when Sasha Vujacic, whose 20 points sparked his team in Game 3, nailed a 3-pointer and it was the Boston Massacre, West Coast style.

But the Celtics wouldn't quit.

"Once we got the lead, obviously, we were thrilled to death," Rivers said. "As far as we were down, nothing was going right for us, and we just hung in there."

Selangor Plans Fund for Babies

SHAH ALAM: To mark its 100 days in office, the Selangor Government wants to set up a fund to meet the welfare needs of babies born from Jan 1.

The criteria on who is eligible for such aid would be announced in detail by Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim during a Pakatan Rakyat gathering at Shah Alam Stadium on June 20.

Other programmes include aid to the elderly and needy such as the distribution of rice to them.

University students from the state can also expect some form of aid to pursue their education.

Khalid’s political secretary Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad told a press conference yesterday that the programmes would focus on ensuring that the welfare of needy people in Selangor was taken care of.

He said parents of babies born from Jan 1 could register at the stadium during the gathering.

According to Nik Nazmi, the state government had bought rice to be distributed to those eligible under the state’s welfare scheme.

He said the programmes were meant to create a platform for the the state’s revenue to be shared among the people.

He said the state government would also make public its successes, including the distribution of free water, during its first 100 days in office.

It’s a whole lot of water

By OH ING YEEN and CHRISTINA LOW

THOSE entitled to the free 20 cubic metres of water in Selangor from this month are actually getting the equivalent of four Syabas water tankers each month.

Syabas corporate affairs general manager Abdul Halem Mat Som said 20 cubic metres is quite a significant amount of water and, if used prudently, would be sufficient for small families.

“It is enough to fill four of our water tankers. At an average, each of our water tankers can take about 5 cubic metres,” Abdul Halem said.

In the agreement made by the state government-owned Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd and Syabas on Wednesday, Syabas would receive RM10.8mil as compensation monthly.

Though the 20 cubic metres of free water for domestic users, which works out to RM11.40, was well received by Selangor folks, certain quarters are afraid that the subsidy could lead to wastage.

Coalition Against Water Privatisation (CAWP) coordinator Charles Santiago said the Selangor government should have done a comprehensive study before carrying out the move as the cost to be borne by the government would be too high.

“To subsidise 1.5 million households in Selangor, the government would have to fork out almost RM11mil per month and more than RM132 million a year,” he said.

He suggested that that the Selangor government should consider rain harvesting instead as it would save the people more than the RM11 they enjoy with the rebate.

“Through water audits, the water bills can also be reduced by up to 30-40%,” he said.

Santiago, who is also Klang MP, added that the rebate would also cause people to waste water as “people would waste anything that comes free”.

“In five years time, we will be facing a water crisis just as how we are facing an oil crisis now. We can live without petrol, but we can't live without water,” he pointed out.

Farah Hanan Abdul Wahid, whose family of five consumes around 36 cubic metres per month , applauded the move as it was good news amid the recent price hikes.

“This is a good move to lessen the burden of those living in Selangor due to our high living costs as everything is so expensive now,” the 22-year-old student said.

Although finance manager Thee K. L., 55, from Kepong, would only need to pay less than RM5 with the rebate, he felt that it would not be of much help.

“The rebate will be a help to the poor, but it does not have much impact for the middle-class,” Thee, whose family of three uses around 22 cubic metres per month, said.

However, Patamah Marimuthu, a 53-year-old housewife, did not feel that wastage would be an issue and was pleased to hear of the rebate.

“I don’t think people will waste water as now the prices of things have gone up,” she said.

In her household of four people, she pays an average of RM30 for the water bill.

City Leading Race For Arshavin?

Manchester City are reported to have budged first in line for Andrei Arshavin should the top-rated Russian playmaker elect to leave Uefa Cup champions Zenit St Petersburg during the summer.

Zenit boss Dick Advocaat has already admitted the club are likely to lose their crown jewel, and the latest statement from his club suggests that judgment day is less than a week away.

“If Arshavin doesn’t leave by June 20 he’ll stay in the team,” confirmed club official Konstantin Sarsania.

The Russia star was vital to Zenit’s European success, earning strong interest from several clubs, including Everton, Roma and Schalke reportedly.

However, it is Thaksin Shinawatra's cash-loaded City who are being touted as the frontrunners for his signature, having already tabled a ₤10 million bid last month.

Arshavin has yet to make an impact on Euro 2008, as he is suspended for Russia's first two games. He could prove pivotal for them in their final group game against Sweden, however.

Austria 1-1 Poland: Late Penalty Saves Hosts Blushes

Austria veteran Ivica Vastic levelled three minutes into injury time to earn a point against Poland after English referee Howard Webb awarded a controversial penalty.

Roger Guerreiro's first goal for his country looked to have given Poland a win against the Euro 2008 co-hosts Austria in Vienna.

Guerreiro, the Brazil-born playmaker, took advantage of an offside flag not appearing, another decision from the English officials that will cause debate.

Josef Hickersberger's side will not be happy with the team led by Webb, despite being given a way back into the game.

Notwithstanding another little-known UEFA interpretation of the laws, Guerreiro looked offside when he tapped in his first for his adopted country. Television pundits also suggested as much at the interval.

Before the opener, the focus had been on how Austria did not open the scoring rather than Webb and his assistants. They picked up where they left off against Croatia, attacking in numbers and applying pressure.

With his club manager Gordon Strachan at the ground as a pundit, Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc made three early saves that kept Poland level.

Two were from Martin Harnik, who firstly latched onto a Marcin Wasilewski backpass and raced through, only for Boruc to deny him with an instinctive save using his feet, diverting the ball just past the upright.

Umit Korkmaz then weaved his way down the left before crossing for Harnik, with Boruc initially diving the wrong way but then using his feet to save, before showing great presence of mind to kick away when Michal Zewlakow passed back to him.

Poland's defence was fragile and exposed again with a ball over the top - and Boruc this time had to deny Christoph Leitgeb.

The Austrians were playing with confidence, spurred on by a home crowd, belying their world ranking of 92nd and looking the more likely to score.

Inevitably, Poland grabbed the opener totally against the run of play, on the half-hour mark.

Euzebiusz Smolarek swung the ball over from left to right, Marek Saganowski checked back and his deflected shot fell into the path of Guerreiro, who tapped in as the flag stayed down.

Jacek Krzynowek then had a couple of efforts from long range as Poland gathered momentum.

It continued after the interval as well, with Smolarek having a 25-yard shot saved.

Austria's efforts were more speculative as Webb turned down a woeful penalty appeal when Andreas Ivanschitz dived in the area without a touch from Pawel Golanski, who had come on at the break for Mariusz Jop.

Leitgeb then tried to catch out Boruc with a 45-yard free-kick but the effort sailed over.

Webb took 56 minutes before reaching for his pocket. Korkmaz was the player who received the yellow card for his trip on Saganowski as the winger checked back from the right byline.

Krzynowek also picked up a booking for having a shot after the whistle had blown, then Wasilewski was carded for pushing away Korkmaz.

Jurgen Macho was having a quiet time in goal for Austria but the former Chelsea stopper was called into action in the 63rd minute when he denied Jacek Bak at close range after Guerreiro had found him unmarked with a cross to the far post.

Krzynowek then had a powerful free-kick tipped over the bar by Macho when he tried his luck from 35 yards.

To compound Austria's problems, Sebastian Prodl was booked and will miss their final game of the group stages.

Austria brought on veteran Vastic for inspiration and he got his chance from 12 yards when Mariusz Lewandowski held Prodl as Poland defended a free-kick.

Who joins Croatia from Group B will now go down to the wire.

Player Ratings: Austria 1-1 Poland

Josef Hickersberger responded to his team’s positive inaugural showing by selecting a more attacking and purposeful unit.

Out went the wing-back system, shunted in favour of a more orthodox and threatening 4-4-2, with Umit Korkmaz and Christian Leitgeib coming in as wingers.

Jurgen Saumel, impressive against Croatia was sacrificed as the extra man in midfield, as Hickersberger set out a side that looked to control proceedings, rather than simply chase and close down space.

Leo Beenhakker, aghast at his side’s capitulation at the hands of Germany persevered with his system with only a smattering of alteration. Pawel Golanski was left out, as was midfielder Wojciech Lobodzinski.

Significantly, Roger Guerreiro, he of the recently acquired Polish passport, was drafted in to provide a more capable ball-carrier in midfield. His elegant possession provided Poland with a varied attacking option while Jacek Kryznowek was unerring in his effort and production.

Ebi Smolarek found leading the line a difficult task for a man of his modest stature, and sought to find space in front of the Austrian rear-guard.

From such a position, his crafty cross-field pass opened the space to allow Marek Saganowski to cross for Guerreiro’s opener.

Austria:

Jurgen Macho (6.5): Equal to the majority of his tasks but displayed some suspect handling again. His touch was significant for Geurreiro’s opener.

Grygory Garics (6.5): The Napoli defender slotted in capably at full-back and supported Leitgeib manfully. Waned as proceedings went on however.

Emanuel Pogatetz (6.0): “Mad Dog”’s commitment has never been questioned but his technical failings were once again exposed. Unsure with the ball at his feet and infinitely more comfortable when simply clearing and tackling.

Sebastian Prodel (6.5): Picked up a booking to rule himself out of the Germany clash and was fouled for the penalty. Competed well with an interchanging Poland front-line that seemed to play without a genuine centre-forward.

Martin Stranzl (6.5): Was unlucky with Guerreiro’s goal; If not for Macho’s touch, he may have blocked down the chance. A solid display against a tricky strike-force.

Rene Aufhuaser (6.5): Has a reduced role as his side controlled possession in the early stages and became more prominent as Poland fought back. Not as impermeable as he may have been.

Andreas Ivanschitz (6.5): Not as prominent as he was against Croatia, however, he still presented a threat from set pieces.

Umit Korkmaz (7.0): Austria’s best player while they controlled proceedings. He made life exceedingly uncomfortable for Wasilevski. Faded as the game went on and looked jaded by the end.

Christian Leitgeb (7.0): Gave Hickersberger an added attacking dimension and worked hard to create chances. Should have scored with his one-on-one.

Martin Harnik (6.0): Worked tirelessly but never got to grips with his finishing. A more assured striker would realistically have had a hat-trick.

Roland Linz (5.5): Had decent support from the flanks but never found himself in the path of the ball in a goal-scoring position.

Substitutes

Ivica Vastic (7.0): An invaluable contribution from the veteran. Held his nerve to score from the spot. Not to the fore until that point.

Roman Kienast (6.0): Grappled and competed but rarely had the ball at his feet.

Jurgen Saumel n/a: Unlucky to lose his starting place and was not involved enough to make a judgement tonight.

Poland:

Artur Boric (9.0): A faultless display from the Celtic goalkeeper. Immense in his duties and rarely looked like being beaten. A shame that he cannot cherish a clean sheet from this encounter.

Marcin Wasilewski (5.5): Given a horrendous first half by the pacy and lively Korkmaz. Rarely looked like getting close to his adversary.

Michal Zewlakow (6.5): Solid both at left back and centre back when deputising for Jop. A steady showing.

Mariusz Jop (4.0): An unfocussed and clumsy 45 minutes work. Put out of his misery at half time.

Jacek Bak (7.0): Effective at both ends. Forced Macho into action as well as making a shoddy defence look something approaching assured.

Dariusz Dudka (6.5): Efficient in his break-up play and used the ball well when Poland reasserted themselves.

Mariusz Lewandowski (6.0): Cost his side the victory through an ill-advised wrestling match with Proedl. He had been hitherto decent in his travails.

Jacek Kryznowek (7.5): A commanding presence with a deceptive turn of pace. An extremely good all round display.

Roger Guerreiro (8.0): A breath of fresh air in a congested fixture. His South American flair added an unexpected panache to proceedings. More comfortable in possession than any of his team-mates and looks capable of creating chances out of nothing.

Marek Saganowski (7.0): The Southampton winger showed good technique and assuredness when assisting Guerreiro. Was effective in possession but would like to have seen more action.

Ebi Smolarek (7.0): A creative conjuror playing as a front man, he found more success in dropping off to slingshot his wingers into action. Full of inventiveness but muted on occasion.

Substitutes

Pawel Golanski (6.5): Fared better than Jop and gave the Poles a more solid tructure.

Wolciech Lobodzinski n/a: Not on long enough to rate.

Rafal Murawski n/a: Not on long enough to rate.

Wolfsburg Confirm Barzagli Deal

VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed today that they will complete the signing of Palermo defender Andrea Barzagli shortly...

While the Italian international's move to the Bundesliga has been considered a 'done deal' for some time, only now have Wolfsburg moved to confirm their part in the switch.

The Niedersachsen side announced via their website: "VfL today agreed on Thursday (12th June) with U.S. Palermo to transfer the 27-year-old defender over the coming days on a three year contract."

Coach Felix Magath said, "We're pleased that our talks with Palermo have brought about a positive result. It reflects well on our work that a player of this calibre has moved to VfL Wolfsburg.

"He brings the quality which this squad needs, particularly with regards to our UEFA Cup participation."

Barzagli thus joins fellow Azzurri ace and Palermo alumnus Cristian Zaccardo in making the move to Die Wölfe, who are spending big after their 5th place finish in the Bundesliga.

Palermo have also confirmed the moves, with the Sicilian club announcing that as part of the deal they will undertake a friendly match on August 12th at the Volkswagen-Arena.

Croatia 2-1 Germany: Favourites Stunned

Group B has seen its first surprise with Croatia beating favourites Germany in Klagenfurt. The German air of invincibility was broken with two goals from Dario Srna and Ivica Olic.

Lukas Podolski grabbed one back, but it proved too little, too late. To make matters worse Bastian Schweinsteiger was sent off late on.

Dark horses Croatia sent out a message of intent to the other Euro 2008 finalists tonight as they stunned highly-fancied Germany to take a huge stride towards a quarter-final spot.

Slaven Bilic made one change to the side that won their opening game against Austria. Schalke’s Ivan Rakitic was brought in to replace Dortmund’s Mladen Petric.

German trainer Joachim Löw sent out the same eleven that beat Poland. Bastian Schweinsteiger had to be content with a place on the bench with Clemens Fritz retaining his place in midfield. Lukas Podolski was again selected on the left hand side of midfield with Klose and Gomez up front.

Darijo Srna and Ivica Olic struck their side's goals as Croatia, who had only ever beaten Germany once before, produced arguably the first major upset of Euro 2008 in an entertaining encounter in Klagenfurt.

Lukas Podolski pulled a goal back late on for Germany with his third strike in two games to set up a nail-biting finale, but there was to be no way back for Joachim Low's team, who finished with 10 men following the 90th-minute dismissal of substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger .

Both sides came into the game having won their opening matches, although Germany had looked far more impressive in seeing off Poland than Croatia had in defeating Austria.

However, it was Slaven Bilic's side who turned on the style at the Worthersee Stadion as they took control of Group B with two wins out of two.

A frantic start to the match promised much but for all their huffing and puffing, neither side were able to create anything resembling a chance in the opening 20 minutes as defences held firm.

The ball did find its way into the back of the net in the 22nd minute when Germany striker Mario Gomez slotted home past Stipe Pletikosa but the offside flag had already gone up against the Stuttgart man.

The deadlock was broken for real just two minutes after that incident though, when Croatia went ahead through Srna.

Danijel Pranjic sent over a superb cross from the left and Srna nipped in front of marker Marcell Jansen to slide the ball in at the far post, Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann given no chance to save.

Croatia had a gilt-edged chance to make it 2-0 in the 30th minute, but Niko Kranjcar wasted it.

Ivan Rakitic chipped a pass into the area which was flicked back towards the penalty spot by Olic, but the in-rushing Kranjcar was unable to cap a well-worked move as he blazed over.

Germany knew they needed to step up through the gears and they finally made Pletikosa earn his keep with two efforts in rapid succession.

The first saw Pletikosa push away a thunderous Michael Ballack free-kick, before the Spartak Moscow custodian awkwardly deflected away a Christoph Metzelder effort with his knee.

Metzelder then headed a Torsten Frings corner just over from seven yards out as the Germans stepped up their efforts for an equaliser before the break.

However, Low's side very nearly found themselves two goals behind in the 43rd minute, and they needed a fine reaction stop from Lehmann to deny Kranjcar, who chested down Olic's pass and smashed in a first-time volley.

Having seen his side let off the hook, Low opted for a more adventurous approach in the second half as he sacrificed full-back Jansen for jet-heeled winger David Odonkor during the interval.

Aside from a Ballack shot over the crossbar though, Croatia looked fairly comfortable at the start of the period and also had a decent effort of their own with Luka Modric firing in a shot that Lehmann gathered, although not before seeing it squirm through his hands first.

Lehmann's next task was to pick the ball out of the back of his net as Croatia stunned the Germans with a second goal in the 62nd minute.

A Rakitic cross from the right took a deflection off Podolski before arrowing goalwards and although Lehmann, who had begun to come out for the initial cross, managed to dive backwards and get a hand on it, the ball struck his near post before rebounding back out to Olic, who had the easy task of slotting home.

Germany looked for an immediate response but aside from a Schweinsteiger shot that fizzed across the face of goal, they were still finding it difficult to create chances against a well-organised Croatia backline.

Low's side earned themselves a lifeline with 12 minutes to go though when Podolski lashed home a shot on the half-volley after the ball had fallen kindly to him in the box.

Germany could not build on that goal, though, and their final hopes of getting anything out of the match all but disappeared when Schweinsteiger was given a straight red card for shoving Jerko Leko.

Player Ratings: Croatia 2-1 Germany

CROATIA

Pletikosa: 6.5- Not too busy overall but did produce a fine save from Ballack in the first half. Helpless to stop Podolski’s goal in the second period.

Corluka: 6.5- A good overall display from the Manchester City full back. Didn’t venture forward as much as Panic on the other flank.

R. Kovac: 7.0- A solid defensive performance from Kovac although the danger from Klose and Gomez wasn’t as great as he may have feared prior to the game. His weak header set-up Podolski for the German goal.

Simunic: 7.0- A fine display from the Hertha Berlin defender alongside Kovac at the heart of the Croatian defence.

Pranjic: 7.5- The Heerenveen full back made plenty of forays forward and looked secure at the back. Secure in defence and a threat going forward.

Srna: 8.0- The Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder had a very good game running himself into the ground before being substituted in the second half. He scored the first goal and was a constant threat with his deliveries from corners and free kicks.

N.Kovac: 7.0- There was some tough tackling from the Salzburg midfielder, and while unspectacular, he performed an important job for Croatia in the heart f the midfield allowing the likes of Modric and Kranjcar forward

Kranjcar: 7.0- A fine display from the Portsmouth midfielder. He was pushed a little further forward to support the lone striker Olic. He wasted a glorious chance to make it 2-0 in the first half after firing straight at Lehmann. Used possession well.

Modric: 8- Ever busy and always looking to create. He kept going right to the end and very nearly got on the end of a good counter attack only to be denied by the stronger Metzelder.

Rakitic: 7.0- The Schalke midfielder had a fine game and linked play up well. It was his cross that was deflected onto the post leading to the second goal from Olic.

Olic: 7.5- The Croat lone striker ran himself into the ground before being replaced in the second half by the fresher Petric. He was rewarded for his efforts with the second goal of the evening.

Substitutes

Petric: 6- Did well when brought on to provide fresher legs after Olic had tired.

Leko: 5- The main talking point will be the incident that led to the sending off of Schweinsteiger. He was pushed but he went down rather theatrically.

Knezevic: n/a

GERMANY

Lehmann: 6- Beaten twice but not at fault for either goal. Let down by Jansen for the first and beaten by a wicked deflection for the second. He pulled off a top reflex save in the first half to deny Kranjcar.

Lahm: 6- Another quiet game from Lahm. We didn’t see him getting forward as much as he does with Bayern, and he had to switch to left back in the second half as Löw switched things around.

Mertesacker: 6.5- Began the game very well blocking and intercepting everything the Croats threw forward, but was helpless to stop them scoring twice.

Metzelder: 6- Metzelder still looked a long way off the pace at times, but is getting through on defensive ability and cleverness. Lost possession cheaply at times, but did get back late on to deny Modric a goal scoring chance.

Jansen: 4.5- Jansen had a bit of a nightmare. Looked good going forward but hopeless defensively. Lost Srna in the box for Croatia’s opener and was hauled off by Joachim Löw at half time

Frings: 6.5- Solid enough but not his dynamic best.

Ballack: 6.5- Captain Ballack did his best to drive the team forward in the second half after going 2-0 down. His header ultimately lead to Podolski’s goals late on.

Fritz: 6- Had a better game than last time out against Poland, but not much of a threat going forward. Had to drop back to full back at half time with Jansen going off and Lahm switching flanks.

Podolski: 7- Another goal for the Bayern striker but it wasn’t enough to spare the Germans defeat. Seems to be enjoying his new role out on the left of midfield.

Klose: 5- A rather anonymous game from the German striker. Difficult to remember any threatening chances on goal.

Gomez: 6- The number one German striker had another quiet game and failed to really threaten the Croat goal. Substituted in the second half for Schweinsteiger.

Substitutes

Odonkor: 5- Didn’t really have the desired impact after being brought on at half time

Schweinsteiger: 5- Did inject a little skill and direction after coming on, but blotted his copy book by becoming the first player sent off at this summer’s finals

Barca To Offer Eto’o For Pirlo

Barcelona could be set to offer want-away striker Samuel Eto’o for AC Milan star Andrea Pirlo, according to DiarioSport.

Eto’o is looking highly likely to leave the Camp Nou this summer in search of a new challenge away from Spain, and he is well known to be on a three-man striker shortlist at Milan along with Didier Drogba and Emmanuel Adebayor.

DiarioSport says that Barca are ready to sell Eto’o to the Rossoneri, providing they receive Andrea Pirlo as part of a swap deal.

Pirlo is widely regarded as the best deep lying playmaker in world football, and a crucial part of the AC Milan set-up.

However the 29-year-old, who has had a poor domestic season, is said to be unsettled at San Siro and considering his future.

Earlier this week Pirlo said: "It would be very nice to taste experiences elsewhere, and indeed there are some proposals very flattering to me.

"With this shirt I've won everything there is to win."

New Barcelona boss Josep Guardiola is a huge admirer of Pirlo, partly because he has a similar style of play to which the Spaniard had when he was a player.

Guardiola is now said to be ready to do everything possible to bring Pirlo to Catalonia, and this includes offering Eto’o in exchange.

It’s on, free water from June

Syabas and KDEB agree to conditions, Selangor folk to get first 20 cubic metres free.

By EDWARD RAJENDRA

SHAH ALAM (The Star): Selangor residents will get to enjoy the first 20 cubic metres of water free after all from June now that the state government has agreed to conditions set by water concessionaire Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd.

State investment arm Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd (KDEB) and Syabas sealed the deal in just 50 minutes yesterday to resolve months of disagreement over the matter.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said the issue was settled along a plan where KDEB would compensate Syabas RM1.8mil a month for the 1.1 million consumers to get that free water.

KDEB had earlier wanted to compensate Syabas after the water industry restructuring in September.

KDEB owns 30% of Syabas which has a 30-year concession to distribute water to consumers in Selangor and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

Yesterday, KDEB president Datuk Abdul Karim Munisar, Syabas chief executive officer Datuk Ruslan Hassan and Khalid held a discussion where the terms and conditions were resolved.

On Monday, Ruslan had said in a statement that the company and the state investment arm KDEB could not agree on “terms and conditions” over how the free water was going to be compensated.

He added that Syabas could not accept KDEB’s offer to compensate the company for the free water in September after the proposed restructuring of water services in the state and wanted payment to be done in 14 days.

Further to that, he said the proposal would have adversely affected the water concessionaire’s cash flow and daily operations, so Syabas continued to charge for the first 20 cubic metres of water until it received favourable terms from KDEB.

Khalid said the cost of the free water would be borne by KDEB, the state’s business arm.

“You must understand that it is the first time such an endeavour is being done to give free water.

“So, there were certain terms that had to be clarified.

“We had to resolve the issue of how the billing would be carried out, the compensation issue and settlement of payment with Syabas,” said Khalid.

He added that there were three phases to the understanding with KDEB and Syabas.

“First phase is the billing exercise, the second is the restructuring of water industry in Selangor and the third is to restudy the allocation of funds and the water pricing as it had to take into account the change of economics,” he added.

Ruslan when met after the press conference said Syabas was in agreement with the understanding achieved in the 50-minute discussion.

“We will go ahead with the billing and consumers will receive their bills with the rebate,” he said.

We'll See Whether The Predictions Is True This July....

According to Mr. Jucelino Nóbrega da Luz, born in 1960 (reportedly still alive in 2008), a Brazilian who has made many predictions that are alleged to be true, such as the prediction of Princess Diana's death by car accident (which is instigated by someone near her and will probably unfortunately be written off as a car accident), 911 and the 2004 Indonesian tsunami, three major disasters will occur in the next few months of 2008, unless we do something about it.

Allegedly, he sees the future in his dreams, and has an average of 3 to 9 such predictions per day. When he wakes up, he will write them down, and send warnings to those concerned. If it concerns only a normal individual, he will write a letter to warn him/her. If it is a famous person(celebrity, politician etc.), or matters concerning the public, he will not only send it to the individual himself/herself, but also related agencies, government, and media. He also urged the media to publicise these predictions, but the reply always went along the lines of rejection for fear of arousing public panic.

Future predictions:

2008, July: There will be an earthquake in Japan , which will cause a tsunami of 30 plus metres high to occur as well.

2008, 18th September: An earthquake with magnitude of approximately 9.1 will rock China , simultaneously causing a tsunami of more than 30 metres to occur, resulting in the deaths of more than 1 million people.

Although this huge earthquake will happen after the Olympics have ended, there will be a series of relatively smaller earthquakes occurring in China before the huge earthquake. The China government, which is more concerned with the success of the Olympics, will most likely neglect to employ appropriate cautionary measures, thus the high casualty rate. If the China government does not publicise the occurrence of these minor earthquakes and evacuate people, the number of deaths will be as predicted.

2008, 17th December: terrorist attack in America

2010: The temperatures in some countries of Africa could be as high as 58 degrees Celsius, and there will be a serious shortage of water.

2010, 15th June: The New York Stock Exchange market will fail, causing an international financial crisis.

2011: The research on the treatment of some cancers will be completed, but a new life-threatening virus will appear. People who are infected will die after only approx. 4 hours of coming into contact with the virus.

2013, 1st - 25th November: Research on treatment of cancers, except for brain tumors, will be completed. An earthquake, caused by volcanic eruptions, will happen on Bahama Island of the Canary Islands . A gigantic tsunami of roughly 150 metres will result. America mainlands, Brazil etc. will be affected, with the tsunami pushing into the land as far as 15 to 20 kilometres. Before the occurrence of this gigantic tsunami, the sea/ocean water levels will sink by about 6 metres, and large flocks of birds will start to migrate.

2014: A small planet that has been gradually closing in on Earth might eventually collide with Earth, and this collision, if come to pass, will affect the survival of humans as a whole.

2015: By the mid of November, the average temperature of Earth could be as high as 59 degrees Celsius. Many people will die from the overheat, and international confusion and terror ensues.

2016, April: A huge typhoon will invade China , causing massive damage. The 43rd USA president, George Walker Bush, will enter the hospital, and faces a life or death situation.

2026, July: A super earthquake will occur in Sans Francisco, and it will be named "The Big One". Huge damage to surrounding areas. Many volcanoes will re-activate, and the height of resulting tsunami will be more than 150 metres.

Mr. Jucelino made known his predictions in hopes that people will take heed of his warnings, so that these disasters may be avoided. He hopes there will be a major change in the thinking of people's mindsets in the time period 2007 - 2008. One factor will be the environmental issue of global warming, which is more serious than what some meteorologists assume.
